Bayhaqi 7173 — Reports indicating that the deceased is punished

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) died, he said to them: Do not weep, for "the weeping of the living is a punishment for the deceased." Amrah (may Allah have mercy on her) said: I asked Sayyidah (Aishah) (may Allah be pleased with her) about this, and she said: May Allah have mercy on him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, concerning a Jewish woman whose family were weeping: "They are weeping over her, and she is being punished in the grave."
