Chapter: One who promises another something intending to fulfil it, then fulfils it or fails to for an excuse, and one who promises intending not to fulfil it

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحَسَنِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ، أنبأ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ الصَّفَّارُ، ثنا عَبَّاسٌ الْأَسْفَاطِيُّ، ثنا أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ، ثنا لَيْثُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَجْلَانَ، عَنْ مَوْلًى، لِعَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَامِرٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَامِرٍ، قَالَ: جَاءَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَيْتَنَا وَأَنَا صَبِيٌّ صَغِيرٌ، فَذَهَبْتُ أَلْعَبُ فَقَالَتْ لِي أُمِّي: يَا عَبْدَ اللهِ، تَعَالَ أُعْطِيكَ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " مَا أَرَدْتِ أَنْ تُعْطِيَهُ "؟ قَالَتْ: أَرَدْتُ أَنْ أُعْطِيَهُ تَمْرًا، قَالَ: " أَمَا إِنَّكِ لَوْ لَمْ تَفْعَلِي لَكُتِبَتْ عَلَيْكِ كِذْبَةً ".
Abdullah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to our house while I was a small child, and I went off to play. My mother said: O Abdullah! Come, I will give you something. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What did you intend to give him?" She said: I intended to give him a date. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you had not done so, this too would have been written as a lie (against you)."
