Chapter: One who promises another something intending to fulfil it, then fulfils it or fails to for an excuse, and one who promises intending not to fulfil it

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ الْقَطَّانُ، أنبأ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، ثنا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ، ثنا سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ، أنبأ يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ، حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَجْلَانَ، عَنْ زِيَادٍ، مَوْلَى عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَامِرِ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَامِرِ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ، سَمِعَهُ يَقُولُ: دَخَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى أُمِّي وَأَنَا غُلَامٌ، فَأَدْبَرْتُ خَارِجًا، فَنَادَتْنِي أُمِّي: يَا عَبْدَ اللهِ تَعَالَ، هَاكَ، فَقَالَ لَهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " مَاذَا تُعْطِيهِ "؟ قَالَتْ: أُعْطِيهِ تَمْرًا، قَالَ: " أَمَا إِنَّكِ لَوْ لَمْ تَفْعَلِي كُتِبَتْ عَلَيْكِ كِذْبَةً ".
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amir bin Rabi'ah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to my mother while I was a boy, and I went outside. My mother called out to me: "Abdullah! Come here." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What are you going to give him?" She said: "A date." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you had not done so, a lie would have been written against you."
