Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I came to Bahrain, and its people asked me about fish cast out by the sea, and I instructed them to eat it. Then I asked Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) about it, and he said: What did you instruct them? Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I told them to eat it. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Had you said anything other than that, I would have struck you with the whip. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) recited this verse: "Lawful to you is the game of the sea and its food, as provision for you" [Surah al-Ma'idah: 96] — what is caught from it, and what it casts out.
