Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) released Abu Azzah al-Jumahi as a favour without ransom; (he did this) because of his daughters, and he took a pledge from him that he would not fight him again. But he broke the pledge and fought him on the day of Uhud, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed that he would not escape, and no one from the polytheists was taken captive except him. Abu Azzah al-Jumahi said: O Muhammad! Show me favour and leave me for my daughters, and I give you a pledge that I will not come to fight you again. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "(No,) you will not stroke your cheeks in Makkah saying: I deceived Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) twice." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the order, and his neck was struck off.
