Sahih al-Jami al-Saghir 571 — When you see the new moon (of Ramadan)
«إذا رأيتم الهلال فصوموا وإذا رأيتموه فأفطروا فإن غم عليكم فاقدروا له»
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When you see the new moon (of Ramadan), fast; and when you see it (the new moon of Shawwal), break the fast (i.e. celebrate Eid); and if the moon is hidden from you (because of clouds), then estimate it (i.e. complete thirty days of Sha'ban)."
