It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him), who was the freed slave of Abi al-Lahm, that he said: I set out with my masters intending to emigrate, until, when we drew near to Madinah, they left me behind them and entered Madinah themselves. I was struck by severe hunger. A man of Madinah passing by said to me: If you go into one of the gardens of Madinah, you could get some fruit from there. So I entered a garden and cut two bunches of dates from a date palm. Suddenly the owner of the garden came, and he seized me and brought me to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me about my situation and I told him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked (pointing to the bunches): "Which of them is better?" I pointed to one of them, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered me to take it and ordered the owner of the garden to take the other bunch, and he let me go on my way.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abbad bin Shurahbil (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: We were struck by famine and hunger, so I came to Madinah and entered one of its gardens. I took some ears of grain, rubbed them, ate some of them and put some in my garment. The owner of the garden came, beat me and snatched my garment. I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (and told him the whole story), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said (to the owner of the garden): "He was ignorant, so why did you not teach him? And he was hungry, so why did you not feed him?" The narrator says: He (peace and blessings be upon him) had my garment returned to me and ordered that I be given one wasq (a specific measure of grain) or half a wasq.
