Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7364

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him), who was the freed slave of Abi al-Lahm, that he said: I set out with my masters intending to emigrate, until, when we drew near to Madinah, they left me behind them and entered Madinah themselves. I was struck by severe hunger. A man of Madinah passing by said to me: If you go into one of the gardens of Madinah, you could get some fruit from there. So I entered a garden and cut two bunches of dates from a date palm. Suddenly the owner of the garden came, and he seized me and brought me to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me about my situation and I told him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked (pointing to the bunches): "Which of them is better?" I pointed to one of them, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered me to take it and ordered the owner of the garden to take the other bunch, and he let me go on my way.
This hadith has an authentic (sahih) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The letter "waw" had dropped out of the manuscripts, and we have established it from the other source works; thus Abu Bakr bin Zayd is actually the shaykh of 'Abd al-Rahman bin Ishaq, not of Ishaq bin 'Abd Allah.

Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts, due to corruption, "Yazid" is written here, whereas in "Talkhis al-Dhahabi" it is present correctly (Zayd).

Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this word has been corrupted into "quti", whereas in "Talkhis al-Dhahabi" the correct word is present.

** Grading: The hadith is hasan.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We could not find a biography (tarjamah) of the paternal uncle of Ishaq (who is the father of 'Abd al-Rahman); however, Abu Bakr bin Zayd (Ibn al-Muhajir) gave him a partial corroboration (mutaba'ah qasirah); he is the shaykh of 'Abd al-Rahman bin Ishaq, two narrators narrated from him, but no declaration of his trustworthiness is reported from anyone (among the imams of criticism and accreditation). This narration is also transmitted from 'Umayr through another route, as will come below.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Imam Ahmad 36/(21942) via Rib'i bin Ibrahim from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Ishaq, with this same chain. Also, Imam Ahmad 39/(24009/84) recorded it similarly in abridged form through the route of Ibn Lahi'ah from Muhammad bin Zayd bin al-Muhajir from 'Umayr.
