It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the people of the Age of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah) used to eat some things (according to their liking) and leave some things out of distaste. Then Allah Almighty sent His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and revealed His Book, and He made its lawful lawful and its unlawful unlawful. So whatever Allah made lawful is lawful, whatever He made unlawful is unlawful, and whatever Allah remained silent about is pardoned (that is, permissible). And he recited this verse: "Say (O Prophet): I do not find, in what has been revealed to me, anything forbidden (to one who would eat it)." [Surah al-An'am: 145]
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Tha'labah al-Khushani (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah Almighty has set certain limits, so do not transgress them; He has laid down certain obligations for you, so do not neglect them; He has made certain things unlawful, so do not violate their sanctity; and your Lord has remained silent about certain things, not out of forgetfulness, but purely as a mercy for you, so accept them (as a blessing) and do not (needlessly) search into them."
