Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: On the basis of supporting reports it may possibly be "hasan li-ghayrihi", but this chain is weak because of Sayf bin Harun al-Burjumi.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Tirmidhi says that Sufyan and others narrated it from Sulayman al-Taymi, from Abu Uthman, as a statement (mawquf) of Salman al-Farisi, and it seems that its being mawquf is more correct. In "al-'Ilal" (513) he transmitted that al-Bukhari said of the marfu' narration that he did not think it was preserved (mahfuz). Ahmad and Ibn Ma'in declared it "munkar" (as Ibn Rajab transmitted in "Jami' al-'Ulum wa al-Hikam" 2/151-152).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Hatim, in "al-'Ilal" (1503) of his son, declared it an error and said that trustworthy narrators narrated it from al-Taymi, from Abu Uthman, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as "mursal", without mention of Salman, and that this is correct.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Sulayman al-Taymi refers to Ibn Tarkhan, and Abu Uthman refers to Abd al-Rahman bin Mull al-Nahdi.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Majah (3367), al-Tirmidhi in his "Jami'" (1726) and in "al-'Ilal" (513), al-Uqayli in "al-Du'afa'" (2/211), Ibn Hibban in "al-Majruhin" (1/346), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (6124), Ibn Adi in "al-Kamil" (3/430), Abu Nu'aym in "Tarikh Asbahan" (1/212) and al-Bayhaqi (10/12) through various routes from Sayf bin Harun with this same chain.
Grading: Al-Tirmidhi called it "gharib" and said that we know it as marfu' only through this route.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Uqayli says that this narration is not preserved from him except with this chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi (10/12) transmitted it through the route of al-Humaydi, from Sufyan bin Uyaynah, from Sulayman al-Taymi, from Abu Uthman, from Salman al-Farisi, with the words "arahu rafa'ahu" (I think he attributed it to the Prophet).
Grading: Its chain is sahih, but there is doubt about its being "marfu'".
Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Tabarani in "Musnad al-Shamiyyin" (2086) through the route of Mu'awiyah bin Salih, from someone (unnamed) who narrated it to him from Salman.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Bayhaqi (9/320) through the route of Yunus bin Khabbab, from Abu Ubaydullah, from Salman al-Farisi as "marfu'".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Here "Abu Ubaydullah" occurs, and al-Bukhari also gave his biography thus in "al-Kuna" (p. 53) and made him the freed slave (mawla) of Ibn Abbas, and Ibn Hibban followed him in "al-Thiqat" (5/570). However, Ibn Abi Hatim placed him among the kunyas in "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" (9/404) as "Abu Ubaydah", mentioned this hadith for him, and transmitted from his father that he is an "unknown" (majhul) man; he gave his biography again (p. 405) and named him Abu Ubayd. Yunus bin Khabbab, who narrates from him, is also weak. Al-Tabarani (in "al-Kabir" 6159) narrated it through the route of Muslim al-Batin, from Abu Abdullah al-Jadali, from Salman as marfu', but it is not known that he heard from Salman al-Farisi.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Uqayli (2/211) through the route of Hammad bin Abd al-Rahman al-Maliki from al-Hasan al-Basri as "mursal".
Grading: Al-Uqayli says that this (its being mursal) is more correct, although its narrator Hammad al-Maliki is accused of lying.
Important point: See the two previous hadiths.
General principle: Linguistically, "al-fara'" (with a fathah) means the wild donkey, and its plural is "fira'". Some commentators have also taken it as the plural of "farw" (a garment of fur-skin), which is supported by al-Tirmidhi's practice, since he mentioned it in his "Jami'" in the chapter on clothing.
