Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7294

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was very fond of "thufl". Abu Muhammad said: I heard Abu Bakr Muhammad bin Ishaq say: "Thufl" means tharid (bread soaked in broth).

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: It is sahih as a mawquf narration, and all its narrators are thiqah (trustworthy).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abbad bin al-Awwam erred in reporting this narration as "marfu'" (up to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)), because two trustworthy narrators, Hammad bin Salamah (who is the most reliable of the students of Humayd al-Tawil) and Wuhayb bin Khalid, contradicted him and reported it as a statement (mawquf) of Umar al-Faruq (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Sa'd in "al-Tabaqat" (1/338), al-Tirmidhi in "al-Shama'il" (185), al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (5524) and al-Diya' al-Maqdisi in "al-Mukhtarah" (6/2019) via Sa'id bin Sulayman with this same chain.
Note / Clarification: An error has occurred in al-Bayhaqi's chain, which can be corrected from here (the present text).
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ahmad in the "Musnad" (21/13300), and through him by al-Diya' al-Maqdisi (2020), through the route of Abu Ja'far Muhammad bin Ja'far from Abbad bin al-Awwam.
Note / Clarification: Abbad bin al-Awwam, explaining "al-thufl", said that it means the thick lower part (sediment) of the broth.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Sa'd (3/296), al-Baladhuri in "al-Ansab" (10/399) and al-Bayhaqi (5525) via Affan bin Muslim, from Hammad bin Salamah and Wuhayb bin Khalid, from Humayd al-Tawil, from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The food Umar liked most was "thufl", and the drink he liked most was "nabidh". Al-Baladhuri's narration is from Hammad alone.
Grading: Al-Bayhaqi says that this (mawquf) narration is more correct than Abbad's earlier (marfu') narration.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): Here Abu Muhammad refers to Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Ali al-Adl, and his teacher Abu Bakr Muhammad bin Ishaq refers to "Imam Ibn Khuzaymah", since al-Hakim's narrations from him occur frequently in "al-Mustadrak".

Note / Clarification: This is one view in the explanation of "al-thufl", while in the narration of Ahmad the narrator Abbad bin al-Awwam explained it as "the sediment of the broth", which is more precise. According to the dictionary "al-Qamus", the thick matter that settles at the bottom of any liquid is called thufl.
General principle: "Tharid" linguistically is bread that has been broken into pieces and soaked in broth.
