Uthman bin Ata narrates from his father that when the epidemic (the plague of Amwas) broke out, Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up (to deliver a sermon) among the army of which he was the commander and said: "O people, this is a mercy from your Lord, the supplication of your Prophet, and the (manner of) death of the righteous before you." Then Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him), while delivering the sermon, supplicated: "O Allah, grant the family of Mu'adh their fullest share of this mercy." While he was in this state, a man came and informed him: "Your son Abd al-Rahman has been stricken by the plague." When he saw his father Mu'adh, Abd al-Rahman said: "O my dear father, 'The truth is from your Lord, so do not be among the doubters' [Surah al-Baqarah: 147]." Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "'You will find me, if Allah wills, among the patient' [Surah al-Saffat: 102]." So from one Friday to the next, all the members of Mu'adh's family died, and the last of them to die was Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him).

Musa bin Ulayy bin Rabah al-Lakhmi narrates from his father that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) addressed the people and said: "Whoever wishes to ask about the Qur'an, let him go to Ubayy bin Ka'b; whoever wishes to ask about the lawful and the unlawful, let him go to Mu'adh bin Jabal; and whoever wishes to ask about wealth, let him come to me, for Allah Almighty has made me a treasurer."
