Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5268

Musa bin Ulayy bin Rabah al-Lakhmi narrates from his father that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) addressed the people and said: "Whoever wishes to ask about the Qur'an, let him go to Ubayy bin Ka'b; whoever wishes to ask about the lawful and the unlawful, let him go to Mu'adh bin Jabal; and whoever wishes to ask about wealth, let him come to me, for Allah Almighty has made me a treasurer."

Grading: (1) Its narrators are trustworthy, but it is "mursal"; because 'Ulayy bin Rabah al-Lakhmi could not have heard from 'Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although 'Ulayy bin Rabah narrated part of 'Umar bin al-Khattab's sermon at al-Jabiyah via "Nashirah bin Sumayy al-Yazani" (who was present there and heard it from 'Umar), Nashirah's narration does not contain 'Umar's instruction that "the people should ask Ubayy about the Qur'an and Mu'adh about the lawful and the unlawful". He did, however, mention in his narration 'Umar's statement that "Allah has made him the treasurer of the wealth", so this part of the report is "sahih and muttasil (connected)".
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Abu 'Ubayd al-Qasim bin Sallam in "al-Amwal" (548), Sa'id bin Mansur (2319), Ibn Sa'd (2/301), Ibn Abi Shaybah (12/316), Humayd bin Zanjawayh in "al-Amwal" (796), Ya'qub bin Sufyan in "al-Ma'rifah wa al-Tarikh" (1/463), Ibn al-Mundhir in "al-Awsat" (6362), Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (5953), al-Bayhaqi (6/210) and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (7/310 and 58/421, 422) through various routes from Musa bin 'Ulayy, with this chain.
Details of the narration: Some of them confined themselves to the mention of Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) instead of the whole report. All of them said, instead of the words "the lawful and the unlawful": "Whoever wishes to ask about fiqh, let him come to Mu'adh bin Jabal." Some narrators also added to the report: "And whoever wishes to ask about the shares of inheritance (fara'id), let him come to Zayd bin Thabit." This additional phrase will soon come with the author (al-Hakim) within narration number (5272), through the route of Abu 'Asim al-Dahhak bin Makhlad, who narrates from Musa bin 'Ulayy.
Reference / Source: The story of 'Umar's (may Allah be pleased with him) sermon at al-Jabiyah was recorded at length by Imam Ahmad (25/(15905)) through the route of al-Harith bin Yazid al-Hadrami, from 'Ulayy bin Rabah, from Nashirah bin Sumayy al-Yazani, from 'Umar bin al-Khattab.
Details of the narration: That narration contains 'Umar's statement found at the end of the report here, that "Allah has made him the treasurer of the wealth", but it does not contain 'Umar's statement about the virtues of the other Companions mentioned in the report.
Grading: Its chain is "sahih", and Ibn Kathir declared it "jayyid" (good) in "Musnad al-Faruq" (643).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: However, it is authentically established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: "The most merciful of my nation towards my nation is Abu Bakr, the sternest of them in the matter of Allah is 'Umar, the most genuine of them in modesty is 'Uthman, the best reciter of the Book of Allah among them is Ubayy bin Ka'b, the most knowledgeable of them in the shares of inheritance (fara'id) is Zayd bin Thabit, and the most knowledgeable of them about the lawful and the unlawful is Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with them). Indeed, every nation has a trustee, and the trustee of this nation is Abu 'Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah." This hadith will come with the author under number (5894) from the narration of Anas.
