Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) Manuscripts (Z) and (B) have this word as "wa tahabbab", and in (Z) there is a "dabbah" on it (a mark indicating doubt). What has been established in the text is taken from manuscripts (S) and (M).
Grading: (2) This report is "hasan", but this particular chain is "very weak" because of 'Uthman bin 'Ata' (Ibn Abi Muslim al-Khurasani).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Also, his father 'Ata' did not live in the time of Mu'adh bin Jabal. However, this report is narrated through several other routes.
Note / Clarification: "Ibn Wahb" is 'Abdullah bin Wahb bin Muslim al-Misri.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (9612) from Abu 'Abdullah al-Hakim (the author), with this chain, and alongside Abu 'Abdullah al-Hakim he paired the name of "Abu Zakariyya bin Abi Ishaq al-Muzakki".
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Imam Ahmad (36/(22085)) through the route of Abu al-Munib al-Ahdab, from Mu'adh bin Jabal.
Grading: Al-Mundhiri in "al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib" (2/221) declared its chain "jayyid" (good).
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Imam Ahmad (1/(1697)) and others through the route of Shahr bin Hawshab, from his stepfather (the husband of Shahr bin Hawshab's mother), who had been present at the plague of 'Amwas, from Mu'adh bin Jabal.
Grading: Its chain has weakness because of "Shahr".
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ibn Abi Shaybah in "al-Musannaf" (11/15-16) and in "al-Iman" (76), 'Abd bin Humayd in "al-Muntakhab min Musnadih" (129, Mustafa al-'Adawi edition), al-Bazzar (2671), al-Tabari in "Tahdhib al-Athar" in the separate part containing the musnads of some of the Ten (123), al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (20/(230), (231)), Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (1/240) and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (11/459, 460) through the route of Shahr bin Hawshab, from al-Harith bin 'Amirah, from Mu'adh bin Jabal.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Bazzar and Abu Nu'aym added a man, "'Abd al-Rahman bin Ghanm", between Shahr and al-Harith. Imam al-Daraqutni said in "al-'Ilal" (994): "And this (the chain with the addition) seems closer to the truth."
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Imam Ahmad (36/(22136)) through the route of Abu Qilabah 'Abdullah bin Yazid al-Jarmi: "The plague broke out in Syria … and Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) said …"
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Qilabah narrated it thus as "mursal"; its narrators are trustworthy, but he did not mention the story of 'Abd al-Rahman bin Mu'adh bin Jabal.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by 'Abd al-Razzaq (20164) through the route of Ma'mar, from Qatadah, who said: "A plague broke out in Syria … and Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) said …" He too narrated it thus as "mursal", and its narrators are trustworthy, but in his narration he did not mention these descriptions of the plague: "It is a mercy from your Lord, the supplication of your Prophet and the death of the righteous before you."
Reference / Source: It was recorded in abridged form by 'Abd al-Razzaq under number (20167) through the route of Ma'mar, who said: "It has reached me that Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) said when the plague broke out in Syria …" Then he mentioned the words describing the plague, but did not mention Mu'adh's supplication or the story of 'Abd al-Rahman bin Mu'adh.
Grading: This narration is "mu'dal" (two or more consecutive narrators are missing from the chain).
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Imam Ahmad in "al-Zuhd" (1021) through the route of Tariq bin 'Abd al-Rahman al-Bajali: "The plague broke out in Syria … and Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up to deliver a sermon." Then he mentioned the same words describing the plague and confined himself to them, without mentioning Mu'adh's supplication or the story of his son 'Abd al-Rahman being struck by the plague.
Grading: It is "mursal" and its chain is sahih.
Reference / Source: It was recorded in full by al-Bayhaqi in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (6/385), and through him Ibn 'Asakir (22/476), through the route of Sulayman bin Musa al-Ashdaq, who mentions that: "The plague struck the people on the day of Jisr 'Amusah …" and then narrated the whole report.
Grading: There is no harm in its narrators, but it is "mursal".
