Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (3) Its narrators are trustworthy, but it is "mursal"; because Humayd bin Hilal (Abu Nasr al-'Adawi) did not live in the time of Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him), as Ibn 'Asakir said in "Tarikh Dimashq" (58/441).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, Khalid bin Mihran al-Hadhdha' narrated this report from Abu Nasr Humayd bin Hilal, from 'Abdullah bin al-Samit al-Ghifari, from Mu'adh bin Jabal; but it is also unlikely that 'Abdullah bin al-Samit met Mu'adh bin Jabal, so the report remains "mursal" in any case. And Allah the Exalted knows best.
Note / Clarification: "Ayyub" is al-Sakhtiyani, and "Ibn 'Ulayyah" is Isma'il bin Ibrahim bin Miqsam al-Asadi; 'Ulayyah is his mother.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (5/270) from Isma'il bin Ibrahim (Ibn 'Ulayyah), with this chain. It was also recorded by Ibn Sa'd (3/542), and through him Ibn 'Asakir (58/440), through the route of Wuhayb bin Khalid, from Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani, with this chain.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ibn 'Asakir (58/440) through the route of Ibn Abi 'Adi, from Khalid al-Hadhdha', from Humayd bin Hilal, with this chain.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by 'Abd al-Razzaq (1700), Ibn Sa'd (3/542), al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (20/(341)), al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (10663) and Ibn 'Asakir (58/441) through the route of Sufyan al-Thawri, from Khalid al-Hadhdha', from Abu Nasr Humayd bin Hilal, from 'Abdullah bin al-Samit, from Mu'adh bin Jabal.
Note / Clarification: In the narration of 'Abd al-Razzaq the kunyah of Humayd bin Hilal has been corrupted into "Abu Nadrah", and only the kunyah is given (Humayd's name is not mentioned), which gave the false impression that he is perhaps "al-Mundhir bin Malik bin Qit'ah al-'Abdi", whose kunyah is Abu Nadrah. But the correct form is "Abu Nasr", as in all the other narrations; indeed, in some of them the name is mentioned along with the kunyah. Furthermore, what is preserved about this report is that it is the narration of Humayd bin Hilal; no one other than him narrated it.
