It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah and Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Mu'adh bin Jabal is the most knowledgeable of the first and the last after the prophets and messengers, and indeed Allah takes pride in him before the angels."

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (2) Imam al-Dhahabi said in "Talkhis al-Mustadrak": "I think it is fabricated (mawdu'), and I do not know this 'Ubayd." 5/ 352. Note / Clarification: A group of scholars quoted this statement of Imam al-Dhahabi and endorsed it, among them Burhan al-Din al-Halabi in "al-Kashf al-Hathith 'amman Rumiya bi-Wad' al-Hadith" (478) and al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar in "Lisan al-Mizan" (5/352). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A similar marfu' narration is also reported from 'Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), in 'Umar bin Shabbah's "Tarikh al-Madinah" (3/879-881), but its chain is utterly worthless (talif), so no reliance can be placed on such a narration. Important point: What is authentic on this matter is the narration that will come with the author under number (5894) from Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), as marfu': "The most knowledgeable of them about the lawful and the unlawful is Mu'adh."
