It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me to Yemen as a judge, and I said: O Messenger of Allah! I am a young man, and cases will come to me of which I have no knowledge. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his blessed hand on my chest and supplicated: 'Allahumma thabbit lisanahu wahdi qalbahu' (O Allah, keep his tongue firm and guide his heart). After that I never had any doubt in giving judgments.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim, but they did not record it.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) that I was present with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man from Yemen came and, relating an incident to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), said: O Messenger of Allah! Three men came to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) disputing over a child; all three had had relations with one woman during a single tuhr (period of purity). Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to two of them: "Give up this child willingly." Then he said: "You are partners disputing with one another. Now I will cast lots between you; the one whose name the lot falls on, the child will be his, and he must pay two-thirds of the diyah (blood money) (of the child) to his two remaining companions." So he cast lots, the lot fell on one of them, and he handed the child over to him. On hearing this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled until his (peace and blessings be upon him) blessed teeth became visible.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij«
In the previous narration of Sayyiduna Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him), this addition is narrated: that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In this case my judgment too would have been the same as what Ali has decided."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it. The narration of Ibn Uyaynah further strengthens it, and Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i has corroborated al-Ajlah in his narration of it.
