It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man came to him and asked: "Was Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) present at the Pledge of Ridwan?" He replied: "No." Then he asked: "Was he present at Badr?" He said: "No." He asked: "Was he among those whom Satan caused to slip (at the Battle of Uhud)?" He said: "Yes." The man got up to leave, and one of those present said to Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): "This man is now claiming that you have spoken against Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him)." Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) asked: "Is that what he is saying? Bring the man back to me." When he came, he asked him: "Did you understand the reality of what I told you?" He said: "Yes. I asked you about Uthman's (may Allah be pleased with him) presence at the Pledge of Ridwan and you denied it, I asked about his presence at Badr and you denied it, and I asked about Satan causing him to slip and you affirmed it." Then Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) explained: "As for the Pledge of Ridwan, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) himself stood up and said: 'Indeed Uthman has gone on an errand (mission) for Allah and His Messenger, and I pledge allegiance on his behalf.' Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) struck one of his hands on the other (taking the pledge on his behalf). As for the Battle of Badr, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and said: 'Indeed Uthman has gone on an errand (mission) for Allah and His Messenger,' and so he (peace and blessings be upon him) assigned him a share (of the spoils), whereas he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not assign a share to any other absent person besides him. And as for those who turned their backs (on the day of Uhud) when the two hosts met (Allah's statement about them is): 'It was only Satan who caused them to slip because of some of what they had earned. And Allah has certainly pardoned them. Indeed, Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Forbearing.' [Surah Al Imran: 155] (That is, since Allah has pardoned them, no one now has the right to object)."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Hawalah (may Allah be pleased with him) that one day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Soon you will come upon a man who has wrapped a cloak (over his head and shoulders) and is taking the pledge of allegiance from the people, and he is from the people of Paradise." (Ibn Hawalah said:) Then I suddenly came upon Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) while he had wrapped himself in a striped Yemeni cloak and was taking the pledge of allegiance from the people.
