Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4589

حَدَّثَنَا أبو بكر أحمد بن سلْمان الفقيه، حَدَّثَنَا أبو داود سليمان بن الأشعث، حَدَّثَنَا موسى بن إسماعيل، حَدَّثَنَا حمّاد بن سَلَمة، حَدَّثَنَا الجَريري، عن عبد الله بن شَقِيق، عن عبد الله بن حَوَالة، قال: قال رسول الله ﷺ ذاتَ يومٍ: "تَهجُمون على رجلٍ مُعتَجِرٍ ببُردةٍ يُبايِعُ الناسَ مِن أهلِ الجنةِ"، فَهَجَمْتُ على عثمانَ وهو مُعتَجِرٌ ببردةِ حِبَرَة يُبايع الناسَ (2).
هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Hawalah (may Allah be pleased with him) that one day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Soon you will come upon a man who has wrapped a cloak (over his head and shoulders) and is taking the pledge of allegiance from the people, and he is from the people of Paradise." (Ibn Hawalah said:) Then I suddenly came upon Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) while he had wrapped himself in a striped Yemeni cloak and was taking the pledge of allegiance from the people.
This hadith has a sahih chain, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

وأخرجه أبو داود الطيالسي (1346)، وعمر بن شبة في "تاريخ المدينة" 3/ 1104، وابن أبي خيثمة في السِّفْر الثاني من "تاريخه" (1230/ ج)، وابن أبي عاصم في "الآحاد والمثاني" (2296)، وفي "السنة" (1292)، وأبو القاسم البغوي في "معجم الصحابة" (1784)، والآجُرّي في "الشريعة" (1482)، وابن عدي في "الكامل" 3/ 392، وأبو بكر القَطِيعي في زياداته على "فضائل الصحابة" لأحمد بن حنبل (825) و (845)، وابن عساكر في "تاريخ دمشق" 39/ 153 من طرق عن حماد بن سلمة، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi (1346) recorded it; Umar bin Shabbah in "Tarikh al-Madinah" (3/1104); Ibn Abi Khaythamah in the second volume of his "Tarikh" (1230/j); Ibn Abi Asim in "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (2296) and "al-Sunnah" (1292); Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (1784); al-Ajurri in "al-Shari'ah" (1482); Ibn Adi in "al-Kamil" (3/392); Abu Bakr al-Qati'i in his additions to Ahmad bin Hanbal's "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (825, 845); and Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (39/153), through several routes from Hammad bin Salamah, with this chain.
وأخرجه الطيالسي (1346)، وأبو الحسن الخِلَعي في "الخِلَعيات" (975)، وابن عساكر 39/ 153 من طريق حماد بن زيد، عن سعيد الجَريري، به.
Reference / Source: Al-Tayalisi (1346), Abu al-Hasan al-Khila'i in "al-Khila'iyyat" (975) and Ibn Asakir (39/153) recorded it via Hammad bin Zayd, from Sa'id al-Jurayri, in the same way.
وجاء عند بعض مَن روى هذا الخبر بإثره بعد قوله: "يبايع الناس" يعني البيع والشراء.
Note / Clarification: With some of the narrators of this report, after the words "yubayi'u al-nas" (he was taking the pledge from the people), this clarification occurs: meaning buying and selling.
والاعتجار: ليُّ العمامة أو الثوب على الرأس.
Note / Clarification: "Al-i'tijar" means: winding a turban or cloth around the head.
والحِبَرة: بُردٌ يَمَانٍ.
Note / Clarification: "Al-hibarah": a (striped) cloak woven in Yemen.
