It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning this statement of Allah Almighty: "These are two opposing parties who dispute concerning their Lord" [Surah al-Hajj: 19], that he said: This verse was revealed about us and about those who fought in single combat (on the battlefield) on the day of Badr, namely (we from the side of the Muslims, and from the side of the disbelievers) Utbah, Shaybah and al-Walid.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) in its chain from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and the two Shaykhs agreed on recording it through the narration of Imam al-Thawri.

Qays bin Ubad narrates: I heard Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) swearing an oath that this verse was revealed on the day of Badr about this group of six people: (from the believers) Ali, Hamzah and Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with them), and (from the disbelievers) Shaybah bin Rabi'ah, Utbah bin Rabi'ah and al-Walid bin Utbah; (the statement of Allah the Exalted): "These are two opposing parties who dispute concerning their Lord" [Surah al-Hajj: 19] up to this statement of Allah: "We will make him taste a painful punishment" [Surah al-Hajj: 25].
