It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning this statement of Allah Almighty: "These are two opposing parties who dispute concerning their Lord" [Surah al-Hajj: 19], that he said: This verse was revealed about us and about those who fought in single combat (on the battlefield) on the day of Badr, namely (we from the side of the Muslims, and from the side of the disbelievers) Utbah, Shaybah and al-Walid.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) in its chain from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and the two Shaykhs agreed on recording it through the narration of Imam al-Thawri.

Explanation & Benefits

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (4) In manuscript (Z), "Abd al-Rahman bin Ahmad" is an error; he is "Abu Abd al-Rahman Ahmad bin Shu'ayb" (Imam al-Nasa'i), and the one narrating from him, Abu Abd Allah al-Hafiz, is "Muhammad bin Ya'qub al-Akhram".
Grading: (1) The hadith is "sahih"; its narrators are "thiqah". Important point: However, the correct position is that the cause of revelation is narrated from Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him), not from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Qabisah, Waki' and Ibn Mahdi narrated it in this way from Sufyan al-Thawri (al-Bukhari: 3966, 3968; Muslim: 3033). Yahya bin Sa'id al-Umawi had doubt in his narration; the "mahfuz" (preserved) version is the narration of the others. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Sufyan was corroborated (on the mention of Abu Dharr) by Hushaym (al-Bukhari and Muslim) and Shu'bah (al-Nasa'i); both narrated it from Abu Hashim. (6/ 1118). Details of the narration: The narration of Qays bin Ubad from Ali is in al-Bukhari (3965, 4744), that Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I will be the first to kneel before Allah for the dispute on the Day of Resurrection." Then Qays said: It was about them that this verse was revealed. This statement of Qays is not transmitted from Ali or Abu Dharr; rather, he took it from Abu Dharr. Ma'mar was corroborated by Yazid bin Harun and Hammad bin Mas'adah.
