صُعُودُ عَلِيٍّ عَلَى مَنْكِبِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ وَإِلْقَاءُ الصَّنَمِ عَنْ سَقْفِ الْكَعْبَةِ
Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) climbing onto the shoulders of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and throwing down the idol from the roof of the Ka'bah

حدثنا أبو بكر أحمد بن كامل بن خَلَف بن شَجَرة القاضي إملاءً، حدثنا عبد الله بن رَوْح المَدائني، حدثنا شَبَابةُ بن سَوّار، حدثنا نُعَيم بن حَكيم، حدثنا أبو مريم، عن علي بن أبي طالب قال: انطلَقَ بي رسولُ الله ﷺ حتى أَتى بي الكعبةَ، فقال لي: "اجلسْ" فجلستُ إلى جَنْب الكعبة، فصَعِدَ رسولُ الله ﷺ بمَنكِبيّ، ثم قال لي: "انهَضْ" فنهضتُ، فلمّا رأى ضَعْفي تحتَه قال لي: "اجلِسْ" فنزلتُ وجلستُ، ثم قال لي: "يا عليُّ، اصعَدْ على مَنكِبيَّ"، فصَعِدتُ على مَنكِبَيه، ثم نَهَضَ بي رسولُ الله ﷺ، فلما نَهَضَ بي خُيِّلَ إليَّ لو شئتُ نِلتُ أفُقَ السماء، فصَعِدتُ فوقَ الكعبة، وتنحَّى رسولُ الله ﷺ، فقال لي: "أَلْقِ صنمَهم الأكبرَ، صنمَ قُريش"، وكان من نحاسٍ مُوتَدًا بأوتادٍ من حديد إلى الأرض، فقال لي رسول الله ﷺ: "عالِجْه"، ورسول الله ﷺ يقول لي: "إيهِ إيهِ ﴿جَاءَ الْحَقُّ وَزَهَقَ الْبَاطِلُ إِنَّ الْبَاطِلَ كَانَ زَهُوقًا﴾ [الإسراء: 81] "، فلم أزَلْ أعالجُه حتى استمكنتُ منه، فقال: "اقذِفْه"، فقَذَفته، فتكسَّر ونَزَوتُ من فوقِ الكعبة، فانطلقتُ أنا والنبيُّ ﷺ نَسعَى، وخَشِينا أن يرانا أحدٌ من قريش أو غيرهم، قال علي: فما صُعِدَ به حتى الساعةِ (2).
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took me along with him until he came to the Ka'bah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Sit down." I sat down beside the Ka'bah. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) climbed onto my shoulders and said to me: "Stand up." I began to stand up, but when he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw my weakness beneath his weight, he said to me: "Sit down." I went down and sat. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "O Ali! Climb onto my shoulders." So I climbed onto his (peace and blessings be upon him) shoulders, and then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up with me. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up with me, it seemed to me that if I wished I could touch the horizon of the sky. I climbed on top of the Ka'bah, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) moved aside. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Throw down their biggest idol, the idol of Quraysh." It was made of copper and was fixed to the ground with iron pegs. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Pull it out." And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), encouraging me, was saying: "Well done, well done! 'Truth has come and falsehood has vanished; indeed, falsehood is ever bound to vanish.' [Surah al-Isra': 81]" I kept trying to pull it out until I got control of it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Throw it down." I threw it down and it broke. Then I jumped down from the top of the Ka'bah. After that, I and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set off running quickly, fearing that someone from Quraysh or others might see us. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Since then, until this day, no one has climbed up onto it (the place of that idol).
أخبرَناه أبو زكريا العَنبَري، حدثنا محمد بن عبد السلام، حدثنا إسحاق بن إبراهيم الحَنظَلي، أخبرنا شَبَابةُ بن سَوَّار، فذكره بمثله.

أخبرنا أبو العبَّاس محمد بن أحمد المحبُوبي، حدثنا سعيد بن مسعود، حدثنا يزيد بن هارون، أخبرنا الوليد بن عبد الله بن جُمَيع، عن أبي الطُّفَيل عامر بن واثلةَ، عن حُذَيفة بن أَسِيد أبي سَرِيحة الغِفاري قال: سمعتُ أبا ذرٍّ الغِفَاريَّ وتَلا هذه الآية: ﴿وَنَحْشُرُهُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ عَلَى وُجُوهِهِمْ عُمْيًا وَبُكْمًا وَصُمًّا﴾ [الإسراء: 97]، فقال أبو ذر: وحدَّثني الصادقُ المصدوقُ ﷺ: "أنَّ الناس يُحشَرون يومَ القيامة على ثلاثةِ أفواجٍ: طاعِمِينَ كاسِينَ راكِبينَ، وفوجٍ يَمشُون ويَسعَوْن، وفوجٍ تَسحَبُهم الملائكةُ على وجوهِهم"، قلنا: قد عَرَفْنا هذَينِ، فما تلك الذين يَمْشُون ويَسعَوْن؟ قال: "يُلقِي اللهُ الآفةَ على الظَّهْر حتى لا تبقى ذاتُ ظهرٍ، حتى إنَّ الرجلَ ليُعطِي الحديقةَ المُعجِبةَ بالشَّاردةِ ذاتِ القَتَبِ" (1).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin Asid Abu Sarihah al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him); he said that I heard Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) recite this verse: "And We will gather them on the Day of Resurrection on their faces, blind, dumb and deaf." [Surah al-Isra': 97] Then Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: And the truthful and the one confirmed as truthful (peace and blessings be upon him) narrated to me: "On the Day of Resurrection the people will be gathered in three groups: one group eating, clothed and riding; the second group of those walking and running; and the third group whom the angels will be dragging on their faces." We (the Companions) said: "We have recognised these two (the first and the third), but who will these walking and running ones be?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty will send down such a calamity upon the mounts (animals) that no mount will remain, to the extent that a man will be willing to give even his beautiful, beloved garden in exchange for a swift she-camel with a saddle."

أخبرنا أبو الفضل الحسن بن يعقوب بن يوسف العَدْل، أخبرنا يحيى بن أبي طالب، حدثنا عبد الوهاب بن عطاء، أخبرنا داود بن أبي هند، عن عِكْرمة، عن ابن عبَّاس قال: نَزَلَ القرآنُ جُمْلةً إلى السماءِ الدنيا، ثم نَزَلَ بعدَ ذلك في عشرينَ سنةً، وقال ﷿: ﴿وَلَا يَأْتُونَكَ بِمَثَلٍ إِلَّا جِئْنَاكَ بِالْحَقِّ وَأَحْسَنَ تَفْسِيرًا﴾ [الفرقان: 33]، قال: ﴿وَقُرْآنًا فَرَقْنَاهُ لِتَقْرَأَهُ عَلَى النَّاسِ عَلَى مُكْثٍ وَنَزَّلْنَاهُ تَنْزِيلًا﴾ [الإسراء: 106] (1).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both); he said: "The Qur'an was sent down all at once (from the Preserved Tablet) to the lowest heaven, then after that it was sent down (little by little) over a period of twenty years." And concerning the saying of Allah Almighty: "And they do not bring you any example except that We bring you the truth and a better explanation" [Surah al-Furqan: 33], he said that what is meant is this verse: "And (it is) a Qur'an which We have divided so that you may recite it to the people at intervals, and We have sent it down in stages." [Surah al-Isra': 106]
