The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), and the two Shaykhs did not record it!

Grading: (1) Its chain is "sahih". Reference / Source: Ahmad (36/ 21712) narrated it from Yazid bin Harun, with this chain. Reference / Source: Ahmad (45/ 27542), Muslim (809), Abu Dawud (4323) and al-Nasa'i (10721) narrated it through various routes from Hammam bin Yahya. Important point: Al-Hakim's treating it as an addition (mustadrak) is an "oversight" on his part. Reference / Source: Ahmad (45/ 27516), (27540) and (27541), Muslim (809), al-Tirmidhi (2886), al-Nasa'i (7971), (10719) and (10720), and Ibn Hibban (785) and (786) narrated it in similar form through various routes from Qatadah. Technical note / Defect ('illah): One of these routes from Qatadah is the narration of Shu'bah from him, and there is "disagreement" over its wording from him (sometimes "from the last verses of Surah al-Kahf" and sometimes "whoever recites three verses from the beginning of al-Kahf"). This indicates that Shu'bah did not retain the wording of the hadith of Abu al-Darda' accurately, and that his narration is "shadh". (2098). Note / Clarification: See the previous hadith of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), numbers (2097, 2098).
