Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3427

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took me along with him until he came to the Ka'bah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Sit down." I sat down beside the Ka'bah. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) climbed onto my shoulders and said to me: "Stand up." I began to stand up, but when he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw my weakness beneath his weight, he said to me: "Sit down." I went down and sat. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "O Ali! Climb onto my shoulders." So I climbed onto his (peace and blessings be upon him) shoulders, and then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up with me. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up with me, it seemed to me that if I wished I could touch the horizon of the sky. I climbed on top of the Ka'bah, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) moved aside. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Throw down their biggest idol, the idol of Quraysh." It was made of copper and was fixed to the ground with iron pegs. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Pull it out." And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), encouraging me, was saying: "Well done, well done! 'Truth has come and falsehood has vanished; indeed, falsehood is ever bound to vanish.' [Surah al-Isra': 81]" I kept trying to pull it out until I got control of it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Throw it down." I threw it down and it broke. Then I jumped down from the top of the Ka'bah. After that, I and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set off running quickly, fearing that someone from Quraysh or others might see us. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Since then, until this day, no one has climbed up onto it (the place of that idol).

Grading: (2) Its chain has "softness" (lin) because Nu'aym bin Hakim is alone in narrating it, and Nu'aym is disputed.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): As for Abu Maryam - he is al-Mada'ini and his name is Qays; it is also said he is al-Thaqafi, and also al-Hanafi - al-Nasa'i declared him trustworthy, Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat", and al-Dhahabi followed them in declaring him trustworthy in "al-Kashif", while al-Daraqutni declared him unknown (majhul) and Ibn Hajar followed him in "al-Taqrib". Despite that, al-Tabari declared the chain of this hadith sahih in his book "Tahdhib al-Athar", in the Musnad of Ali (p. 237), and al-Dhahabi said in "Talkhis al-Mustadrak": "Its chain is clean, but the text is munkar."
Reference / Source: Ahmad (2/ 644) narrated it from Asbat bin Muhammad, from Nu'aym bin Hakim, with this chain.
