It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that he had a drying-yard of dates from which dates kept going missing. One night he kept watch, and there he saw a figure the size of a young boy approaching puberty. He greeted it, and it returned the greeting. He asked: "Are you a jinn or a human?" It said: "I am a jinn." He said: "Show me your hand." It showed him, and it was like the hand of a dog, with a dog's hair. He said: "This is how the jinn are created." Then it said: "All the jinn know that there is no one among them stronger than me." He asked: "What brought you here?" It said: "We were told that you love charity, so we came to take some of your food." He asked: "What will protect us from you?" It said: "Do you recite Ayat al-Kursi from Surah al-Baqarah, 'Allah, there is no god but Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all' [Surah al-Baqarah: 255]?" He said: "Yes." It said: "If you recite it in the morning, you will be protected from us until evening, and if you recite it in the evening, you will be protected until morning." Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) said: In the morning I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him of this, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The wicked one has spoken the truth."
