Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 986

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no deficiency (error or doubt) in prayer, nor in the salam." Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal says: As I see it, he meant that you should not give the salam and be greeted in return (during prayer), and a man's deficiency in his prayer is that he ends it with the salam while he is in doubt whether the prayer is complete or not.
This hadith is sahih on the condition of Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

(Clarification): (3) Imam al-Khattabi said that the root meaning of "ghirar" is a shortfall in a she-camel's milk; here it means not falling short in the greeting, i.e., the reply should be given in full, just as the greeting was given (for example, in reply to "al-salamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah", one should not say only "al-salamu 'alaykum").
General principle: "Ghirar" in prayer takes two forms: one is not completing the bowing and prostration; the other is doubting whether one has prayed three or four rak'ahs and ending the prayer on doubt rather than on certainty.
