Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) liked to hold palm stalks in his hand. One day he (peace and blessings be upon him) entered the mosque with one of them in his hand, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw some traces of spittle on the qiblah wall of the mosque, so he scraped them off. Then he turned to the people in a state of anger and said: "Would any of you like a man to stand facing him and spit in his face? When one of you stands for prayer, he is facing his Lord, and the angel is on his right. So let him not spit in front of him or to his right, but let him spit under his left foot or to his left. And if he is overcome by it, let him do like this in the edge of his garment." And he (peace and blessings be upon him) folded the garment over itself to show them.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.
