Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 94

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah Almighty has distributed your characters among you just as He has distributed your provisions among you. And Allah Almighty certainly gives the world both to the one He loves and to the one He does not love, but He gives faith only to the one He loves."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, and Ahmad bin Janab al-Missisi is alone in narrating it, but he is trustworthy; and our condition is that we accept the solitary narration of a trustworthy narrator if it is free of any defect. Sufyan bin Uqbah has also corroborated this narration of Isa bin Yunus:

Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the printed edition there is a distortion here, and "Sufyan" was printed in place of "Shayban".

Grading: It is sahih as "mawquf" on Abd Allah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ahmad bin Janab is saduq (truthful) and the narrators above him are thiqah. There is disagreement over Sufyan al-Thawri as to whether it is marfu' or mawquf, and the correct view is that it is mawquf, as al-Daraqutni stated explicitly in "al-Ilal" (5/271).
Note / Clarification: Musa bin Harun is "al-Hammal", Zubayd is "Zubayd bin al-Harith al-Yami", and Murrah is "Murrah bin Sharahil al-Hamdani".
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "al-Qada' wa al-Qadar" (366-367) from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim with this chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Daraqutni (5/271), al-Isma'ili in "Mu'jam al-Shuyukh" (3/726) and Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (5/35) narrated it through various routes from Ahmad bin Janab.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Isa bin Yunus narrated it as marfu', but he was contradicted by Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi (Zuhd Ibn al-Mubarak: 1134), Muhammad bin Kathir al-Abdi (al-Adab al-Mufrad: 275), Muhammad bin Talhah (al-Tabarani: 8990) and Malik bin Mighwal.
Important point: All these narrators narrated it from Sufyan al-Thawri as "mawquf" (a saying of Ibn Mas'ud), and this group is greater in number and firmer in memory.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Zuhayr bin Mu'awiyah, narrating from Zubayd, also corroborated Sufyan al-Thawri on its being "mawquf"; Abu Dawud narrated it in "al-Zuhd" (147).
