The Mother of the Believers, Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), narrates: One night the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was with me in bed, and then I could not find him (peace and blessings be upon him). I looked, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) was in prostration, with his heels joined together and the tips of his blessed fingers facing the qiblah. I heard him (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: 'A'udhu bi-ridaka min sakhatik, wa bi-'afwika min 'uqubatik, wa bika minka, uthni 'alayka la ablughu kulla ma fik' ((O Allah,) I seek refuge in Your pleasure from Your anger, and in Your pardon from Your punishment, and I seek refuge in You from You; I cannot praise You as You have praised Yourself). When he (peace and blessings be upon him) finished, he said: "O Aishah, your devil came to you." I said: "Is there no devil with you?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Every human being has a devil with him." I asked: "O Messenger of Allah, even you?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, but I supplicated to Allah against him, and he submitted (became Muslim)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs, but they did not record it with these words. The mention of joining the heels in prostration is found only in this narration.

Grading: (3) Its chain is "hasan". It was narrated by Ibn Hibban (1933) by two routes from Sa'id bin Abi Maryam. Reference / Source: A similar narration was recorded by Ahmad, Muslim (486) and Abu Dawud through al-A'raj from Abu Hurayrah from 'A'ishah, but it does not mention "joining the heels"; rather it mentions "keeping the feet upright", and this is more correct. Reference / Source: Its last part (the story of Satan) was narrated by Ahmad and Muslim (2815) through Yazid bin Qusayt from 'Urwah from 'A'ishah. Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (8858) also narrated it by way of 'Ubadah bin al-Walid.
