Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 923

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not spread out your forearms (in prostration); rather, support yourself on your palms and keep your arms away from your sides, for when you do that, every limb of yours prostrates with you."
Imam Bukhari used Adam bin Ali as evidence and Imam Muslim used Muhammad bin Ishaq as evidence. This hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (3) It is sahih as mawquf on Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and this chain is "hasan".
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Khuzaymah (645), Abu Nu'aym and al-Diya' al-Maqdisi by way of Ubayd Allah bin Sa'd bin Ibrahim with this same chain.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Hibban (1914) and al-Diya' al-Maqdisi by way of Abd Allah bin Sa'd (the brother of Ubayd Allah), from his father and his uncle, from Ibrahim bin Sa'd, from Ibn Ishaq.
Variation in the chain: Sufyan al-Thawri and Imam Abu Hanifah (may Allah have mercy on them both) narrated it through Adam bin 'Ali as "mawquf": Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saw a man in prostration with his forearms spread on the ground and forbade him, saying: "Do not spread (your arms) the way a beast of prey spreads them; rather, support yourself on your palms." And this (its being mawquf) is correct.
(Clarification): "Wa-dda'im" means: support yourself, or lean. Originally it was "idta'im"; the ta' was changed into dal and merged into it (idgham).
(Clarification): "Tajafa" means: keep away. "Al-dab'" refers to the 'adud (upper arm), i.e. keep your upper arms away from your sides.
