Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) taught us the prayer. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said the takbir, and when he intended to bow he joined his palms together and placed them between his knees (tatbiq). When this reached Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: "My brother has spoken the truth. We used to do this, but later we were commanded to hold the knees."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but they did not record it in this form, although the two Shaykhs agreed upon its meaning.

Hadith Takhrij«
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (3) Its chain is strong. Technical note: 'Alqamah is Ibn Qays, and 'Abdullah is Ibn Mas'ud. Reference / Source: Ahmad (7/3974), Abu Dawud (747) and al-Nasa'i (623) narrated it through various routes from 'Abdullah bin Idris. 6/ (3588). Reference / Source: Imam Muslim (534) narrated with the chain of Ibrahim al-Nakha'i that Ibn Mas'ud performed "tatbiq" in ruku' (joining his hands and placing them between his thighs) and said: "This is how the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did it".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) There is an oversight by the author (al-Hakim) here; the correct chain is "Isma'il bin Abi Khalid from al-Zubayr bin 'Adi from Mus'ab bin Sa'd from his father", which is in Muslim (535). Al-Bukhari (790) narrated it with the chain of Abu Ya'fur.
