It is narrated from Abu al-Za'ra'; he said: The Dajjal was mentioned in the presence of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: "O people! When he emerges, you will split into three groups: one group will follow him; one group will flee to their forefathers in the scrublands; and one group will encamp on the bank of this river Euphrates. He will fight them and they will fight him until they are martyred in the west of Syria (al-Sham). They will send out a vanguard from among themselves in which there is a red (sorrel) or piebald horse; they will fight, and not one of them will return." The narrator said: Abu Sadiq informed me, on the authority of Rabi'ah bin Najidh, that it will be a red (sorrel) horse. And (Abdullah bin Mas'ud said): "The People of the Book claim that the Messiah (peace be upon him) will descend and kill him. And Gog and Magog (Ya'juj and Ma'juj) will emerge, rushing down from every elevation; they will surge through the earth and cause corruption in it." Then Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) recited this verse: "And they will rush down from every elevation." [Surah al-Anbiya': 96] Then he said: "Then Allah Almighty will send upon them a worm like the worms found in camels' noses, which will enter their ears and nostrils, and they will die from it, and the earth will stink because of them. Then people will cry out in supplication to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and He will send water that will cleanse the earth of them. And Allah will send a wind carrying severe cold, and it will take the soul of every believer on the earth; then the Hour will be established upon the worst of people. Then an angel will stand with the Trumpet between the heaven and the earth and blow into it, and all of Allah's creation in the heavens and the earth will die, except whom your Lord wills. Then there will be an interval between the two blasts, as long as Allah wills. There will be no one among the children of Adam except that some part of him remains in the earth. Then Allah Almighty will send water from beneath the Throne like the semen of men, and from it their flesh and bodies will grow just as the vegetation of the earth grows from the soil." Then Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) recited this verse: "And it is Allah who sends the winds, and they stir up clouds, and We drive them to a dead land," reciting until "Thus will be the Resurrection." [Surah Fatir: 9] Then he said: "Then an angel will stand with the Trumpet between the heaven and the earth and blow into it, and every soul will go to its body and enter it, and they will all stand up at once, like the standing of a single man, before the Lord of the worlds. Then Allah Almighty will manifest Himself to the creation. He will meet the Jews and say: 'Whom did you worship?' They will say: 'We worshipped Uzayr.' He will say: 'Would you like water?' They will say: 'Yes.' Then He will show them Hell, and it will appear like a mirage." Then Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) recited this verse: "And on that Day We will present Hell to the disbelievers, plainly displayed." [Surah al-Kahf: 100] Then he said: "Then He will meet the Christians and say: 'Whom did you worship?' They will say: 'We worshipped the Messiah.' He will say: 'Would you like water?' They will say: 'Yes.' Then He will show them Hell, and it will appear like a mirage. Then in the same way everyone who worshipped anything besides Allah will be presented." Then Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) recited this verse: "And stop them; indeed, they are to be questioned." [Surah al-Saffat: 24] Then he said: "Until only the Muslims remain. He will say: 'Whom did you worship?' They will say: 'We worshipped Allah and did not associate anything with Him.' He will rebuke them two or three times, saying: 'Whom did you worship?' They will say: 'We worshipped Allah and did not associate anything with Him.' He will say: 'Do you recognise your Lord?' They will say: 'Glory be to Him! When He makes Himself known to us, we will recognise Him.' At that moment the Shin will be uncovered, and no believer will remain without falling down in prostration before Allah. The hypocrites will remain, their backs becoming like a single plank, as though iron skewers had been driven through them. They will say: 'O our Lord!' He will say: 'You used to be called to prostration when you were safe and sound.' Then, by Allah's command, the Sirat will be laid over Hell, and people will pass in groups according to their deeds. The first of them will pass like the flash of lightning, then like the passing of the wind, then like the flight of a bird, then like the passing of cattle; then a man will pass running, then a man will pass walking, until the last of them comes: a man dragging himself along on his belly. He will say: 'O my Lord! Why did You hold me back?' Allah will say: 'I did not hold you back; rather, your deeds held you back.' Then Allah Almighty will grant permission for intercession. The first to intercede will be the Holy Spirit, Jibril, then Ibrahim, then Musa, then Isa; then your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) will stand, and there will be no one who can intercede as he intercedes. This is the Praiseworthy Station (al-Maqam al-Mahmud) which Allah Almighty has mentioned: 'It may be that your Lord will raise you to a praiseworthy station.' [Surah al-Isra': 79] Then there will be no soul that does not see its house in Paradise and its house in Hell." Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "And that will be the Day of Regret, when the people of Hell see their house in Paradise." Sufyan (the narrator) said: "Alas! If only you knew! When the people of Paradise see that house of theirs in Hell, they will say: 'Had Allah not favoured us, we too would have been here.'" Then he said: "Then the angels, the prophets, the martyrs, the righteous and the believers will intercede, and Allah will accept their intercession. Then He will say: 'I am the Most Merciful of those who show mercy.' Then by His mercy He will bring out of Hell more people than all of the creation had brought out, until He does not leave in it anyone in whom there is any good." Then Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) recited: "O disbelievers! 'What has brought you into Saqar?' [Surah al-Muddaththir: 42]" And he gestured with his hand and made a knot (counting), then recited the disbelievers' reply: "We were not of those who prayed, nor did we feed the poor, and we used to indulge in idle talk with those who indulged, and we used to deny the Day of Recompense." [Surah al-Muddaththir: 43-46] Then he said: "Do you see any good in these people?! And no one in whom there is any good will be left in Hell. Then, when Allah Almighty decides that He will not bring out anyone else, He will change their faces and their colours. A man will come and intercede, and he will say: 'Whoever recognises anyone, let him take him out.' That man will go but will not recognise anyone. A man will call out to him and say: 'I am so-and-so.' He will say: 'I do not know you.' At that point they will say: 'Our Lord! Bring us out of it; then if we return (to evil), we will indeed be wrongdoers.' [Surah al-Mu'minun: 107] Allah will say: 'Remain despised therein, and do not speak to Me.' [Surah al-Mu'minun: 108] When Allah has said this, Hell will be closed over them, and not a single human being among them will ever come out."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) In the manuscripts the word is "يرسل", and this is an error.
Grading: (1) Its chain is soft (layyin, i.e. weak) because Abu al-Za'ra' is alone in narrating it. It is a repetition of what passed at number (8729).
