Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8975

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The thickness of the disbeliever's skin will be forty-two cubits by the cubit of the Jabbar (a giant man), and his molar tooth will be like (Mount) Uhud."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it. Shaykh Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The meaning of his (peace and blessings be upon him) words "by the cubit of the Jabbar" is: a giant from among the giants of mankind who lived in the earliest generations, whose build was very large and whose limbs and forearms were longer than those of us humans.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (2) Its chain is strong.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This strength is on account of Muhammad bin Sulayman bin al-Harith (Abu Bakr al-Baghandi), for there is no harm in him, and he has also been corroborated. Shayban is Ibn 'Abd al-Rahman al-Nahwi, al-A'mash is Sulayman bin Mihran, and Abu Salih is Dhakwan al-Samman.
Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi (2577) and Ibn Hibban (7486) narrated it by two routes from 'Ubayd Allah bin Musa, with this chain. Al-Tirmidhi said: This hadith is hasan sahih gharib from the narration of al-A'mash.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The words in the narration "بذراع الجبّار" (by the cubit of al-Jabbar) are "mudraj" (interpolated) in the hadith. Abu Hurayrah did not hear it as marfu' (from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)); rather, he took it from 'Abd Allah bin Mas'ud as his saying, as Jarir bin 'Abd al-Hamid made clear in his narration from al-A'mash.
Reference / Source: 'Abd Allah bin Ahmad narrated in "al-Sunnah" (1192) from Harun bin Ma'ruf and Abu Ma'mar al-Hudhali, from Jarir, from al-A'mash, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: 'Abd Allah bin Mas'ud said to me: O Abu Hurayrah, do you know how wide the skin of the disbeliever is? I said: I do not know. He said: Forty cubits by the cubit of al-Jabbar. This chain is sahih, and Jarir is better known and narrates more from al-A'mash than Shayban al-Nahwi.

Note / Clarification: (1) "Al-Jabbar" here may also mean a tall, huge (person), as Ibn al-Athir held in "al-Nihayah" (under the root: jabr).
