Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8961

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On the Day of Resurrection a man will take hold of his father's hand, and while taking him across the Fire he will want to admit him into Paradise." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then it will be announced: 'Indeed, no polytheist shall enter Paradise. Listen! Indeed, Allah has forbidden Paradise to every polytheist.'" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then he will say: 'O my Lord! (This is) my father.' So his father will be transformed into an extremely ugly and foul-smelling form, and he will leave him." The narrator said: The Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) held that this man is Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not tell them anything more than that.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts it is "ليأخذ" (without the emphatic nun), while what is established from "Talkhis al-Dhahabi" (ليأخذن) is the correct one.

Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (252, 645) recorded it via Ahmad bin al-Miqdam al-'Ijli, from Mu'tamir bin Sulayman, with this same chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is a narration from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) in al-Bukhari (3350), in which it is stated "marfu'": "Ibrahim (peace be upon him) will take hold of his father's hand."
