It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), in the presence of his Companions, recited this verse: "O mankind, fear your Lord. Indeed, the convulsion of the Hour is a tremendous thing" [Surah al-Hajj: 1] to the end of the verse. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Do you know what day that will be?" They said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is the day when Allah Almighty will say to Adam (peace be upon him): Stand and bring out the contingent of the Fire - or he said: Send a contingent to the Fire. He will say: O my Lord, out of how many? Allah Almighty will say: Out of every thousand, nine hundred and ninety-nine to the Fire and one to Paradise." This weighed very heavily on the people, and dejection and grief came over them. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I hope that you will be a quarter of the people of Paradise." Then he said: "I hope that you will be a third of the people of Paradise." Then he said: "I hope that you will be half of the people of Paradise." So they were glad. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Keep doing good deeds and receive glad tidings, for you are between two creations (Ya'juj and Ma'juj) who, whoever they are with, they make their number very great. And among (other) people - or among the nations - you are just like a mole on the side of a camel, or like a distinctive mark on the foreleg of a she-camel, and my Ummah is one part in a thousand (of all creation)."
This hadith with this addition is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.
