Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8912

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him); he (the narrator) said: We were sitting in the mosque on Friday, and he said: "The greatest of the days of this world is Friday. On it Adam (peace be upon him) was created, and on it the Hour will be established, and the most honoured of all Allah's creation is Abu al-Qasim (peace and blessings be upon him)." The narrator said: I said: May Allah have mercy on you, then what is the standing of the angels? He looked at me, smiled and said: "O my nephew, do you know what the angels are? The angels are only a creation like the creation of the heaven, the earth, the winds, the clouds, the mountains and the rest of creation, who do not disobey Allah in anything. And the most honoured creation in the sight of Allah is Abu al-Qasim (peace and blessings be upon him)." He further said: "Paradise is in the heaven and Hell is in the earth. When the Day of Resurrection comes, Allah Almighty will raise the creation nation by nation and prophet by prophet, until Ahmad (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Ummah are in the last position after all the nations." He said: "Then a bridge (the Sirat) will be placed over Hell, then a caller will call out: Where are Ahmad (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Ummah? So he (peace and blessings be upon him) will stand, and the righteous and the wicked of his Ummah will all follow him. They will step onto the bridge, and Allah Almighty will blind the eyes of his enemies, and they will fall into the Fire to the right and the left, while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the righteous who are with him will be saved. The angels will receive them, saying: Our Lord, we settle them in their abodes in Paradise, on Your right and on Your left, until he (peace and blessings be upon him) reaches his Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, and a chair will be placed for him on the right of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic. Then the caller will call out: Where are Isa (peace be upon him) and his Ummah? So he will stand, and the righteous and the wicked of his Ummah will follow him. They will step onto the bridge, and Allah will blind the eyes of his enemies, and they will fall into the Fire to the right and the left, while the prophet (peace be upon him) and the righteous who are with him will be saved. The angels will meet them (and will say): Our Lord, we settle them in their abodes in Paradise, on Your right and on Your left, until he reaches his Lord, and a chair will be placed for him on the other side. Then in the same way the other prophets and their nations will follow them, until the last of them is Nuh (peace be upon him). May Allah Almighty have mercy on Nuh (peace be upon him)."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it. It is not mawquf (a Companion's own statement), because Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him), despite his precedence in knowledge of the ancient scriptures, is among the Companions, and he has attributed it with a chain mentioning the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in more than one place. And Allah knows best.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The one saying (this) is "Bishr bin Shaghaf". Manuscripts (K) and (M) have the words "wa-kunna 'indahu julusan" (and we were sitting with him).

Grading: Its chain is "sahih mawquf".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Identification of the narrators: "Muhammad bin Ghalib" is the well-known hafiz nicknamed "Tamtam"; "'Affan" is Ibn Muslim al-Saffar; and "Muhammad bin Kathir" is al-'Abdi al-Basri.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (148, 360) and "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (5/ 485-486) via 'Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Asma', from Mahdi bin Maymun, with this chain, but he did not quote it in full.
Reference / Source: Its first half was narrated by al-Harith bin Abi Usamah in his Musnad (935 - Bughyat al-Bahith), and via him by Abu Nu'aym in "Sifat al-Jannah" (131), from 'Abd al-'Aziz bin Aban al-Kufi, from Mahdi bin Maymun.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although "'Abd al-'Aziz" is a matruk (abandoned) narrator, he is not alone in this narration, as you see (since other reliable narrators also have it).
Reference / Source: The account of Paradise being in the heavens and the Fire being in the earth was narrated by Ibn Abi al-Dunya in "Sifat al-Nar" (179) from Khalid bin Khidash, from Mahdi.
Grading: The narrator "Khalid bin Khidash" is saduq (truthful) and acceptable (la ba'sa bihi).
Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Dulabi in "al-Kuna wa al-Asma'" (14) and Abu Nu'aym in "Sifat al-Jannah" (454) via al-Khadir bin Muhammad bin Shuja', from Isma'il Ibn 'Ulayyah, from Mahdi bin Maymun, as "marfu'" to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Khadir is "saduq", but this (marfu') narration of his is "shadh", since Isma'il bin 'Amr al-Bajali contradicted him in al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" (14984): he narrated from Ibn 'Ulayyah its opening part (the account of the most honoured of creation) and gave it as "mawquf".
Reference / Source: The account of Paradise and the Fire was recorded by Ibn Abi al-Dunya (178) via Shu'bah, and the account of the most honoured of creation by al-Tabarani (14983) via Wasil (the client of Abu 'Uyaynah); both of them narrate it from Muhammad bin Abi Ya'qub as "mawquf".
Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym (131) narrated both accounts via 'Amr bin 'Uthman al-Kilabi al-Raqqi, from Musa bin A'yan, from Ma'mar, from Muhammad bin Abi Ya'qub, as "marfu'".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This narrator "'Amr bin 'Uthman" is one whom al-Nasa'i abandoned (tarakahu al-Nasa'i).
Reference / Source: This hadith in full is with 'Abdullah bin al-Mubarak in "al-Zuhd", in the transmission of Nu'aym bin Hammad from him, at number (398), from Ma'mar, from someone who heard Muhammad bin Abi Ya'qub, as "mawquf".
Important point: And this is the "mahfuz" (preserved) version.

Grading: It has already been stated that the "marfu'" version is not preserved (mahfuz), and it is authentic from 'Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) only as "mawquf".
