Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8913

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he recited this saying of Allah Almighty: "And the Day the heaven will split open with the clouds, and the angels will be sent down in a great descent" [Surah al-Furqan: 25], and said: On that day the lowest heaven will split open with the clouds, and angels will descend from every heaven, their number far greater than all the jinn and humans on the earth. The people of the earth (seeing their awe) will ask: "Is our Lord among you?" They will answer: "No." Then the angels of the second heaven will descend, their number greater than the angels of the first heaven and all the people of the earth. They will ask: "Is our Lord among you?" They will answer: "No." Then the angels of the third heaven will descend, their number greater than the angels of the first two heavens and all the people of the earth. They will ask: "Is our Lord among you?" They will say: "No." Then the angels of the fourth heaven will descend, their number greater than the angels of all the previous heavens and the people of the earth. They will ask: "Is our Lord among you?" They will say: "No." Then the angels of the fifth heaven will descend, their number greater than the first four heavens and all the people of the earth. They will ask: "Is our Lord among you?" They will say: "No." Then the angels of the sixth heaven will descend, their number greater than the first five heavens and all the people of the earth. They will ask: "Is our Lord among you?" They will say: "No." Then the angels of the seventh heaven will descend, their number greater than all six heavens and all the people of the earth. They will ask: "Is our Lord among you?" They will say: "No." Then the Karubiyyun (the angels brought near) will descend, their number greater even than the angels of all seven heavens and the people of the earth, and then the angels who carry the Throne will descend, the joints of whose horns will be like the knots of spears (in strength). The distance between the feet of one of them will be immense: from the sole of his foot to his ankle is a journey of five hundred years, from the ankle to the knee a journey of five hundred years, from the knee to the tip of the nose a journey of five hundred years, and from his collarbone to the place of the earring a distance equal to a journey of five hundred years.
All the narrators of this hadith are acceptable as proof except Ali bin Zayd bin Jud'an al-Qurashi. And although this report is mawquf on Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), it is extremely astonishing and strange.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In manuscripts (M) and (B) this word is "ka-ku'ub" (like the joints), with the kaf of comparison.
Note / Clarification: "Al-qana" is the plural of "al-qanah", i.e. spears, and "ka'b" is the part between each two knots of the spear's shaft. See Ibn al-Athir's "al-Nihayah" (entry: ka'b).

Technical note / Defect ('illah): The word "'am" here is only in manuscript (K).

Grading: Its chain is weak because of the weakness of 'Ali bin Zayd (Ibn Jud'an).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Dhahabi was lenient in his "al-Talkhis" and declared this chain strong (whereas it is weak).

Grading: Its chain is weak because of the weakness of 'Ali bin Zayd (Ibn Jud'an), and al-Dhahabi in "al-Talkhis" was lenient and called it strong.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Adam bin Abi Iyas in his "Tafsir" (2/ 450-451) from Hammad bin Salamah; and also by Asad bin Musa in "al-Zuhd" (53), al-Darimi in "al-Radd 'ala al-Jahmiyyah" (142) and in "Naqduhu 'ala Bishr al-Marisi" (1/ 476-477), and Ibn Abi Hatim in his "Tafsir" (8/ 2682), by various routes from Hammad bin Salamah, with this chain. With some of them it is abridged.
Reference / Source: A similar narration was recorded by al-Tabari in his "Tafsir" (19/ 6-7) via Mubarak bin Fadalah, from 'Ali bin Zayd.
Reference / Source: Likewise it was narrated by Ibn al-Mubarak in "al-Zuhd" in the transmission of Nu'aym bin Hammad (353), Ibn Abi al-Dunya in "al-Ahwal" (173), al-Harith bin Abi Usamah in his "Musnad" (1122 - Bughyat al-Bahith) and Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (6/ 62) via 'Awf al-A'rabi, from Abu al-Minhal Sayyar bin Salamah al-Riyahi, from Shahr bin Hawshab, from Ibn 'Abbas.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (The narrator) Shahr bin Hawshab has some weakness.
Reference / Source: Ghassan bin Burzin narrated it, in Asad bin Musa's "al-Zuhd" (52), from Sayyar bin Salamah, from Abu al-'Aliyah al-Riyahi, from Ibn 'Abbas.
Grading: The narrators of this narration are thiqah, but this narration is "shadh".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): For Ghassan contradicted a narrator more trustworthy and more precise than himself ('Awf al-A'rabi, whose narration has passed above), since 'Awf mentioned "Shahr bin Hawshab" in it (in place of Abu al-'Aliyah).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Content close to this report of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) is narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) as "marfu'" to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the "hadith of the Sur" (the long hadith about the trumpet), which was recorded by Ishaq bin Rahwayh in his "Musnad" (10), Ibn Abi al-Dunya in "al-Ahwal" (155), al-Tabari in his "Tafsir" (2/ 330-331) and others.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In it is "Isma'il bin Rafi'" (the storyteller of the people of Madinah), and he is utterly weak (da'if bi-marrah).
