أخبرني أبو النَّضْر الفقيه، حدثنا عثمان بن سعيد الدارِمي، حدثنا عبد الله بن صالح، أخبرنا أبو المَليح الرَّقّي، حدثني زياد بن بَيَان - وذكر من فضلِه - قال: سمعتُ عليَّ بنَ نُفيل يقول: سمعت سعيدَ بن المسيّب يقول: سمعت أم سَلَمة تقول: سمعت النبي ﷺ يَذكرُ المَهديَّ، فقال: "نَعَم، هو حقٌّ، وهو من بني فاطمةَ" (3).

It is narrated from Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mention the Mahdi, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, he (the Mahdi) is true, and he will be from the descendants of Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her)."

(3) صحيح موقوفًا من قول سعيد بن المسيب كما سيأتي، ولم يرتض الإمام البخاري إسناده، فقد ذكره في ترجمة زياد بن بيان من "التاريخ الكبير" 3/ 346 عن عبد الغفار بن داود عن أبي المليح الرقي، ثم قال: في إسناده نظر.
Grading: This narration is "sahih mawquf" as the statement of Sa'id bin al-Musayyab, as will follow.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Bukhari did not approve of its (marfu') chain; he mentioned it in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (3/ 346) in the biography of Ziyad bin Bayan via 'Abd al-Ghaffar bin Dawud, from Abu al-Malih al-Raqqi, and then said: "There is some doubt (nazar) about its chain."
وقد أخرجه أبو داود (4284) من طريق عبد الله بن جعفر الرقي، وابن ماجه (4086) من طريق أحمد بن عبد الملك، كلاهما عن أبي المليح الرقي - وهو الحسن بن عمر الفزاري مولاهم - بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: This hadith was narrated by Abu Dawud (4284) via 'Abdullah bin Ja'far al-Raqqi and by Ibn Majah (4086) via Ahmad bin 'Abd al-Malik; both narrate it from Abu al-Malih al-Raqqi (whose name is al-Hasan bin 'Umar al-Fazari) with this chain.
ورواه من قول ابن المسيب سعيدُ بن أبي عروبة عن قتادة قال: قلت لسعيد بن المسيب: المهدي حقٌّ؟ قال … فذكره. أخرجه نعيم بن حماد في "الفتن" (1082)، وأبو عمرو الداني في "السنن الواردة في "الفتن" (580) من طريق عبد الرزاق، عن معمر، عن سعيد بن أبي عروبة. وهذا إسناد صحيح.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Sa'id bin Abi 'Arubah narrated it as the statement of Sa'id bin al-Musayyab, via Qatadah, who said: I asked Sa'id bin al-Musayyab: Is (the coming of) the Mahdi true? He said (and then he mentioned the full narration).
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Nu'aym bin Hammad in "al-Fitan" (1082) and by Abu 'Amr al-Dani in "al-Sunan al-Waridah fi al-Fitan" (580) via 'Abd al-Razzaq, from Ma'mar, from Sa'id bin Abi 'Arubah.
Grading: This chain is sahih.
