حدثنا أبو العباس محمد بن يعقوب، حدثنا محمد بن إسحاق الصَّغَاني، حدثنا عمرو بن عاصم الكِلَابي، حدثنا عِمرانُ القَطَّان، حدثنا قَتَادة، عن أبي نَضْرة، عن أبي سعيد قال: قال رسول الله ﷺ: "المهديُّ منا أهلَ البيت، أشمُّ الأنفِ أَقْنى أَجْلى، يملأُ الأرضَ قِسطًا وعَدْلًا كما مُلِئَت جَوْرًا وظُلمًا، يعيشُ هكذا"؛ وبسط يسارَه وإصبعين من يمينه المُشيرة (1) والإبهامَ وعَقَدَ ثلاثةً (2).
هذا حديث صحيح على شرط مسلم، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Mahdi will be from us, the people of the household. He will have a high-bridged nose and a broad forehead. He will fill the earth with justice and fairness just as it had been filled with tyranny and oppression. He will live this many years." And he (peace and blessings be upon him) spread out his left hand and extended two fingers of his right hand (the index finger and the thumb) and folded three fingers (that is, he indicated seven years).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

(1) تحرَّف في النسخ الخطية إلى: المسبوه. وما أثبتناه هو الصواب، فالمشيرة: هي الإصبع التي يقال لها: السبّابة، كما في معاجم اللغة. ويعني بالإشارة المذكورة سبع سنين.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts this word had been corrupted into "al-masbuh"; what we have written (in the text) is correct.
Note / Clarification: "Al-mushirah" is the finger called "al-sabbabah" (the index finger), as in the lexicons, and the gesture here refers to a period of seven years.
(2) إسناده حسن إن شاء الله من أجل عمران بن داور القطان، فهو مختلف فيه، إلّا أنه حسن الحديث إن شاء الله، لكن الذهبي في "تلخيصه" ذهب إلى تضعيفه. أبو نضرة: هو المنذر بن مالك بن قِطعة.
Grading: Its chain is hasan, if Allah wills, on account of 'Imran bin Dawar al-Qattan.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The scholars differed about 'Imran al-Qattan; nevertheless he is hasan in hadith, if Allah wills, though al-Dhahabi in his "al-Talkhis" inclined to declaring him weak. The name of the narrator "Abu Nadrah" is al-Mundhir bin Malik bin Qit'ah.
وأخرجه أبو داود (4285) عن سهل بن تمام، والخطابي في "غريب الحديث" 2/ 191 من طريق عفان بن مسلم، كلاهما عن عمران القطان، بهذا الإسناد إلّا أنَّ عفان قال في أول حديثه: "يملك رجل من أهل بيتي؛ أو قال: من أمتي"، ولم يصرِّح بتسميته المهديَّ. وسهل فيه لِين، وعفان أوثق الثلاثة الذين رووه عن عمران.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Abu Dawud (4285) from Sahl bin Tammam, and by al-Khattabi in "Gharib al-Hadith" (2/ 191) via 'Affan bin Muslim; both of them narrate it from 'Imran al-Qattan with this chain.
Details of the narration: 'Affan said at the beginning of his hadith: "A man from my household will rule; or he said: from my Ummah", and he did not explicitly name him as "the Mahdi".
