Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8871

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "Soon there will be a tribulation in which people will be sifted and separated just as gold is separated (from earth) in a mine. So do not revile the people of Syria, but revile their oppressors, for among them are the Abdal (the chosen servants of Allah). Soon Allah Almighty will send upon them (the oppressors) a calamity (a flood or disaster) from the sky that will drown them, so much so that if even foxes fought them, they would overcome them. Then at that time Allah Almighty will raise up a man (al-Mahdi) from the family ('itrah) of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), with twelve thousand (if they are few) or fifteen thousand (if they are many) people with him. Their slogan (or sign) will be 'Amit, amit' (Kill, kill). They will fight under three banners, while opposing them will be the people of seven banners, every banner-bearer among whom will covet kingship. So they (the opponents) will be killed and defeated. Then that Hashimi (al-Mahdi) will appear, and Allah Almighty will restore to the people their harmony, blessings, prosperity and provision (grain, the fruit of the arak and the like), and they will remain in this state until the Dajjal emerges."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In our manuscripts this word is written in the shape of "Razin", which is a corruption. In "Talkhis al-Dhahabi" it is in its correct form.

Note / Clarification: "Al-sayyib" (with sin) is a dialectal variant of "al-sayyib" (with sad), and the form with sad is better. It means the falling of rain. See al-Khattabi's "Gharib al-Hadith" [1/ 492].

Note / Clarification: Our manuscripts have "wa-khams", whereas what is recorded in the text is taken from "al-Talkhis", and that is the standard usage.

Note / Clarification: This is how it is in the manuscripts, and the word "bariruhum" is absent from manuscript (M). "Al-inad" is the ripening of dates, and "al-barir" is the fruit of the arak (salvadora) tree. In Nu'aym bin Hammad's "al-Fitan" (1005) the wording is: "wa-fadatuhum wa-bazaratuhum" (the narrator said:) We asked: What are the fadah and the bazarah? He said: Matters will be let loose (opened up) to the point that a man will say whatever he wishes and will fear nothing.

Grading: Its narrators are acceptable (la ba'sa bihim), but its text (matn) is very unusual (gharib).
Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (3905), and via him by Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" [1/ 334 - 335], via 'Ali bin al-Husayn al-Khawwas, from Zayd bin Abi al-Zarqa', from Ibn Lahi'ah, from 'Ayyash bin 'Abbas, from 'Abdullah bin Zurayr, from 'Ali, as marfu' to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Lahi'ah is weak because of his poor memory. And in the chain leading to him is 'Ali bin al-Husayn al-Khawwas, who is majhul (unknown), even though Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat" [8/ 474]. Ibn 'Asakir [1/ 334] narrated it via al-Walid bin Muslim, from Ibn Lahi'ah, from 'Ayyash, from Ibn Zurayr, from 'Ali, and gave its opening part (the account of people being sifted as gold is sifted) as marfu'.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani also narrated this account as marfu' in "al-Awsat" (291), with the chain Ahmad bin Rishdin, from Muhammad bin Sufyan al-Hadrami, from Ibn Lahi'ah, from 'Ayyash bin 'Abbas, 'Abdullah bin Hubayrah and al-Harith bin Yazid, from Ibn Zurayr, from 'Ali.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Rishdin, al-Tabarani's shaykh, is weak, and his shaykh Muhammad bin Sufyan is not known.
Reference / Source: Nu'aym bin Hammad narrated it in abridged form as mawquf in "al-Fitan" (1005) via 'Abdullah bin Wahb, from Ibn Lahi'ah, from al-Harith bin Yazid, from Ibn Zurayr, from 'Ali (abridged, from the words "Allah will send a man" to the end, with similar wording).
Reference / Source: He also narrated it likewise at (1006) via Rishdin bin Sa'd, from Ibn Lahi'ah, from 'Ayyash, from Ibn Zurayr, from 'Ali.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Rishdin is weak.
Reference / Source: Ibn 'Asakir [1/ 335] narrated it in abridged form, concerning the prohibition of reviling the people of Syria and that the abdal are among them, via 'Abdullah bin Salih, from Abu Shurayh 'Abd al-Rahman bin Shurayh, from al-Harith bin Yazid, from Ibn Zurayr, from 'Ali.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): 'Abdullah bin Salih had a poor memory, and there is an unknown element in the chain leading to him.

Note / Clarification: The manuscripts have "qaza'", whereas what we have recorded (in the text) is correct. "Al-qaza'" means scattered patches of cloud.
