Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8870

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "There has never been a state of truth in which Adam (truth) was not given the upper hand over Iblis (falsehood), nor a state of falsehood in which Iblis was not given the upper hand over Adam. Iblis was commanded to prostrate but he disobeyed, so Adam was given the upper hand over him, until, when one (of the sons of Adam) killed the other, Iblis was given the upper hand over him. And soon tribulations will arise: a particular tribulation and a general tribulation, then a particular tribulation and then a general tribulation." It was said: O Commander of the Believers! What is meant by the particular and the general tribulation? He said: "(A time will come when) there will be two imams (leaders): one an imam of truth and the other of falsehood. (People's state will be that) some will turn from truth to falsehood and some from falsehood to truth; this is the 'particular tribulation' (which concerns the beliefs of individuals). Then there will be two imams: one of truth and the other of falsehood, and (the whole society) will begin to turn from truth to falsehood and from falsehood to truth; this is the 'general tribulation' (which will envelop the entire nation)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) (because its narrator al-Waddah is none other than Abu Awanah), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The manuscripts have "Abu al-Waddah", which is an error. Al-Waddah here is al-Waddah bin 'Abdullah, Abu 'Awanah al-Yashkuri, the father-in-law of Yahya bin Hammad.

Note / Clarification: Manuscripts (Z), (K) and (B) have "fitnah", while it does not appear in (M) or in "Talkhis al-Dhahabi". What we have recorded (in the text) is correct, in agreement with the two earlier places (numbers 8554 and 8751).

Grading: Its chain may possibly be graded hasan on account of Tarafah al-Musli. He is a senior Successor, from whom only Salim bin Abi al-Ja'd narrates. Al-Bukhari and Ibn Abi Hatim mentioned him but recorded no criticism or praise of him, while Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: He has a corroboration (mutaba'ah) for the core of the report in the account of the trials (fitan), as has already appeared under number (8554) via 'Asim bin Damrah from 'Ali.
Note / Clarification: The end of the report here has come thus in our manuscripts, and it contains a repetition!
Important point: We have not found it via Tarafah al-Musli with anyone other than the author.
