أخبرنا أحمد بن محمد بن إسماعيل، حدثنا أبي، حدثنا أبو الطاهر وأبو الرَّبيع قالا: حدثنا ابن وهب، أخبرني عبد الرحمن بن شُرَيح، عن بكر بن عمرو (2) المَعافِري، عن بُكَير بن عبد الله بن الأشجِّ، عن كُرَيب مولى ابن عباس: أنه كان مع ابن عبّاس ومعه ابن الزُّبير في نَفَرٍ، فدخل عليهم أبو هريرة فقال: مُوتُوا فقال ابن الزُّبير: يا أبا هريرة، الدِّينُ قائم، والجهادُ قائم، والصلاةُ والزكاةُ والحجُّ وصيامُ رمضان، قال أبو هريرة: أنْ تموتَ قبل أن تُدرِكَ (3) ما لا يستطيع المحسنُ أن يزيدَ إحسانًا، ولا يستطيع المسيءُ أن يَنزِعَ عن إساءَتِه (1).

It is narrated from Kurayb (the freed slave of Ibn Abbas) that he was sitting with Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas and Sayyiduna Ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them) among a group of people, when Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) came in and said: "Die, all of you!" At this Ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Abu Hurayrah! (What are you saying?) The religion is established, jihad continues, and the prayer, zakah, Hajj and the fasting of Ramadan are (all) present. Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: (What I mean is) that you should die before that time comes when the doer of good will be unable to increase his good, and the wrongdoer will be unable to turn back from his wrongdoing (that is, conditions will become so corrupted by the abundance of tribulations).

Note / Clarification: In manuscripts (Z) and (B) this word has been corrupted into "'Awf".
(3) هكذا في "تلخيص الذهبي"، وهو الصحيح، وفي نسخنا الخطية قبل أن لا تدرك، بزيادة "لا"، وما في نسخة الذهبي أصح إلّا إن قيل: زيدت "لا" لتأكيد الكلام لا لنفيه.
Note / Clarification: This is how the wording appears in "Talkhis al-Dhahabi", and it is correct. In our manuscripts the words are "qabla an la tudrak" (with the addition of "la"). The wording of al-Dhahabi's copy is more correct, unless it is said that "la" was added here not for negation but to emphasise the statement.
(1) إسناده حسن من أجل بكر بن عمرو المعافري. أبو الطاهر: هو أحمد بن عمرو بن عبد الله بن السَّرْح، وأبو الربيع: هو سليمان بن داود بن حماد المهري.
Grading: Its chain is hasan on account of Bakr bin 'Amr al-Ma'afiri.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu al-Tahir is Ahmad bin 'Amr bin 'Abdullah bin al-Sarh, and Abu al-Rabi' is Sulayman bin Dawud bin Hammad al-Mahri.
وهذا الخبر لم نقف عليه عند غير المصنف.
Important point: We have not found this report with anyone other than the author (al-Hakim).
