Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8868

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik al-Ashja'i (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the occasion of a conquest he came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), greeted him (peace and blessings be upon him) with salam and said: O Messenger of Allah! Congratulations to you; Allah has honoured your victory and made your religion prevail, and war has laid down its burdens (its weapons). At that time the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was seated in a leather tent (a dome-shaped tent). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Awf! Come inside." He asked: Shall I come in wholly or partly? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Come in wholly." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "War will not lay down its burdens until six (signs) have appeared: the first of them is my death." Hearing this, Awf began to weep, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Say: This is the first. The second: the conquest of Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem). The third: a tribulation will befall the people like the disease of sheep ('uqas), (killing suddenly). The fourth: a tribulation from which no household among the people will be spared without its effect entering it. The fifth: a boy from the children of kings will be born among Banu al-Asfar (the Romans). He will grow in a day as much as an ordinary child grows in a week, in a week as much as an ordinary child grows in a month, and in a month as much as an ordinary child grows in a whole year. When he reaches twelve years of age, they will make him their king. Then he will stand among them and say: How long will these people (the Muslims) prevail over the best of our lands?! I intend to march against them with an army and drive them out of it. So the orators will stand up and endorse his opinion. He will order ships to be built on the islands and on land, then he will load fighters onto them and land them between Antioch and al-Arish." Ibn Shurayh said: I heard someone say: They will be under twelve banners (ghayayah), and under every banner there will be twelve thousand soldiers. The Muslims will gather to their leader in Bayt al-Maqdis, and they will agree in their opinion to march towards the City of the Messenger (Madinah) until their outposts reach al-Sarh and Khaybar. Ibn Abi Ja'far said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They will drive my Ummah out of the places where desert plants (shih) grow." Al-Harith bin Yazid said: They (the Romans) will remain there; a third of the Muslims will flee (in fear), a third will be martyred, and Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will grant defeat upon them through the third who are steadfast. Khalid bin Yazid said: By Allah! On that day the Muslims will fight with their swords and spears and will pursue them until they reach the narrow passage near Constantinople. They will find that its water has dried up, so they will cross over to the city (Constantinople) and encamp there. Then Allah Almighty will bring down their walls through the takbir (the cry of Allahu Akbar), and the Muslims will prevail over them and will divide the spoils by the shield-full. Abu Qabil said: While they are in this state, suddenly a rider will come and say: You are here while the Dajjal has come behind you among your families; yet this will be a false report. So those who had heard the words of the people of knowledge will hold firm to their success, and the rest will disperse. The Muslims will be building mosques in Constantinople and waging jihad beyond it until the Dajjal emerges, and this will be the sixth sign.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this name has been corrupted into "Yusuf".

Note / Clarification: In manuscripts (M) and (B) this word has been corrupted into "ka-'iqas" (with the 'ayn placed first). The correct form is "al-qu'as", a disease that afflicts livestock in which fluid runs from their noses and they die suddenly.

Note / Clarification: In the phrase "lahu ra'yuhu" the manuscripts have a corruption into "al-dirayah"; it has been corrected from "Talkhis al-Dhahabi".

Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this word is written thus with two ya's. A comment on this word has already been given under the earlier narration number (8508).

Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Abi Ja'far here is 'Ubaydullah bin Abi Ja'far al-Misri, the jurist; he is one of the teachers of 'Abd al-Rahman bin Shurayh. Likewise the three shaykhs mentioned later (al-Harith bin Yazid, Khalid bin Yazid and Abu Qabil al-Ma'afiri) are also among his teachers, and all three are among the trustworthy (thiqah) narrators of Egypt. Abu Qabil's name is Huyayy bin Hani'.

Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this word is "sa-yuqimu" (with the nun dropped), whereas what we have recorded (in the text, "sa-yuqimun") is the standard usage.

Grading: With this wording this narration is da'if (weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Dhahabi in "al-Talkhis" declared it defective on account of a break in the chain. Probably he meant between Ishaq bin 'Abdullah and 'Awf bin Malik, since we have not been able to identify this Ishaq; at this level there are several narrators by this name whose biographies al-Mizzi and others give. Moreover, the one narrating from him, Rabi'ah bin Sayf, is weak and has munkar reports. Furthermore, 'Abd al-Rahman bin Shurayh narrated from his shaykhs (mentioned in the previous note) fragments (ahrufan maqati') without giving them full chains.
Important point: The author (al-Hakim) is alone in narrating this hadith with this wording. However, what has already appeared by other routes from 'Awf bin Malik under numbers (6460), (8500) and (8508) suffices in its place, and that is sahih.
