Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8834

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah al-Bahili (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed us one day, and most of his address was about the Dajjal, until he (peace and blessings be upon him) finished his address. Among the things he (peace and blessings be upon him) told us that day was: "Allah Almighty did not send any prophet except that he warned his nation about the Dajjal. I am the last of the prophets and you are the last nation, and he (the Dajjal) will certainly emerge among you. If he emerges while I am among you, then I will contend with him on behalf of every Muslim; and if he emerges among you after me, then every person will be his own defender, and Allah is my successor (guardian) over every Muslim. He will emerge from a route between Iraq and Syria and will spread great tribulation and mischief to the right and to the left. O servants of Allah, remain steadfast! He will begin (his tribulation) by saying: I am a prophet, whereas there is no prophet after me. Then the second thing he will say is: I am your Lord, whereas you will never see your Lord before you die. Between his two eyes will be written 'Kafir' (disbeliever), which every believer will read. So whoever of you meets him should spit in his face and recite the opening verses of Surah al-Kahf. He will be given power over one soul of the children of Adam, whom he will kill and then bring back to life; he will be able to do this only with that one person, and he will not be given this power over anyone else. Among his tribulations is that he will have with him a Paradise and a Fire; his Fire will (in reality) be Paradise and his Paradise will (in reality) be Fire. So whoever is tested by being thrown into his Fire should close his eyes and call upon Allah for help, and that fire will become cool and safe for him, just as it became cool and safe for Ibrahim (peace be upon him). Among his tribulations also is that he will pass by a tribe and they will believe in him and affirm him, so he will pray for them, and on that very day the sky will rain upon them and the earth will bring forth crops that very day, and in the evening their livestock will return larger than before, very fat, with full flanks and udders full of milk. And he will pass by a tribe who will disbelieve in him and deny him, so he will invoke against them, and (because of drought) by morning not one of their grazing animals will remain. He will remain on the earth for forty days: one day of them will be like a year, one day like a month, one day like a week, and one day like ordinary days, and his last days will be like a mirage (very short). You should estimate (the times of) those long days and pray. (In the last days the situation will be such that) a man will set out in the morning from one gate of the city, and evening will fall before he reaches the other gate." The Companions said: O Messenger of Allah! How shall we pray in those short days? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Estimate (the time) in them and pray."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it with this wording.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The words: "He will say: I am your Lord, and you will never see your Lord (in this world)" dropped out of the manuscripts; they are established in the margin of manuscript (K) with a mark of correction, and they are in "Talkhis al-Dhahabi", where the wording is: "And indeed you will not see your Lord".

Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this was corrupted into "fal-yaqul"; the correction is from "al-Talkhis" and the sources of the takhrij.

Grading: Its chain is "hasan".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): 'Amr al-Hadrami is "'Amr bin 'Abd Allah al-Saybani al-Hadrami"; a detailed discussion of the hasan grade of his hadith has passed under hadith no. (8522). The paternal uncle of Ahmad bin 'Abd al-Rahman is "'Abd Allah bin Wahb".
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (4322) narrated it by way of Damrah bin Rabi'ah, and Ibn Majah (4077) by way of Isma'il bin Rafi', both of them from Abu Zur'ah Yahya bin Abi 'Amr al-Saybani, in the same way.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Isma'il dropped "'Amr al-Hadrami" from his chain, and this is one of his "errors", since there is weakness in him. Ibn Majah's narration is very long, and Abu Dawud did not quote its wording but referred to the hadith of al-Nawwas before it.

Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Among its shawahid (supporting reports) is the hadith of al-Nawwas bin Sim'an in Sahih Muslim, which has already appeared with the author (al-Hakim) under no. (8718).
