Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8835

It is narrated from Atiyyah al-Awfi that he heard Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) say: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Listen! Every prophet warned his nation about the Dajjal. And he has eaten food as of this day of his (that is, he has already been born). And I am giving you firm information that no prophet before me gave to his nation. Listen! His right eye will be blotted out (blind); its pupil will be protruding and will not remain hidden, as if it were phlegm stuck on the side of a wall. Listen! His left eye will be like a shining star. With him will be things like Paradise and Hell; (his) Hell will in fact be a green garden, and (his) Paradise will be a dusty, smoky place. Listen! Ahead of him will be two men who will warn the people of the towns; whichever town they enter, they will warn its people, then when they leave it, the vanguard of the Dajjal's companions will enter that town. He will enter all the towns except Makkah and Madinah; these two have been made forbidden to him. The believers will be scattered in the earth, and Allah will gather them for him. Then a man from among the believers will say to his companions: By Allah! I will certainly go to this man and see whether he is the one about whom the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) warned us or not. Then he will turn away. His companions will say to him: By Allah, we will not let you go. If we knew that he would kill you when you went to him, we would let you go, but we fear that he will lead you into tribulation. But that believing man will refuse to listen to them and will resolve to go to him. So he will set out until he reaches one of the Dajjal's outposts (a detachment of guards). They will seize him and ask him: What is your intention and what do you want? He will say to them: I want to go to this lying Dajjal. They will say: Do you say this? He will say: Yes. So they will send word to the Dajjal: We have seized a man who is saying such-and-such; shall we kill him or send him to you? He will say: Send him to me. So he will be taken until he is brought before the Dajjal. When he sees him, he will recognise him by the description given by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Dajjal will ask him: What is your matter? The believing servant will say to him: You are the lying Dajjal about whom the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) warned us. The Dajjal will say to him: Do you say this? He will say: Yes. The Dajjal will say to him: Will you obey my commands, or else I will split you into two pieces? The believing servant will call out and say: O people! This is the lying Messiah (the Dajjal); whoever disobeys him will go to Paradise, and whoever obeys him will go to Hell. The Dajjal will say to him: By the One by whom I swear! Obey me, or else I will split you into two pieces. The believing servant will call out again and say: O people! This is the lying Messiah; whoever disobeys him will go to Paradise, and whoever obeys him will go to Hell. So the Dajjal will stretch out his leg, place an iron on the lower end of his spine and split him into two pieces. When this has been done to him, the Dajjal will say to his followers: What do you think, if I bring him back to life for you, will you not know that I am your Lord? They will say: Certainly." Atiyyah says: Then Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to me that the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then he (the Dajjal) will strike one of his two halves, or the earth beside him, and he will stand up straight. When his followers see this, they will affirm him and be certain that he is their Lord, and they will accept him and follow him. The Dajjal will say to the believing servant: Do you not believe in me? The believer will say to him: Now I have even greater insight (certainty) about you than before. Then he will call out among the people: Listen! This is the lying Messiah; whoever obeys him will go to Hell, and whoever disobeys him will go to Paradise. The Dajjal will say: By the One by whom I swear! Obey me, or else I will slaughter you, or throw you into the fire. The believer will say to him: By Allah! I will never obey you. So the Dajjal will give an order and he will be laid down." The narrator says: Then Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me that the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty will place two plates of copper between his collarbones and his neck (Abu Sa'id said: Before that day I did not know what copper was), so the Dajjal will try to slaughter him but will not be able to do so, and after killing him once he will not be given power over him again." The narrator says: Then the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "So he will seize him (the believer) by his hands and feet and throw him into (his) Paradise, although it will be a dusty, smoky place which that man will think is Hell." The narrator says: Then Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "That man will be the closest of my Ummah to me in the loftiness of rank on the Day of Resurrection." The narrator says: Then Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Companions of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) used to think that this man would be Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), until Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) went on his way (that is, passed away). The narrator Atiyyah says: Then I asked him (Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him)): So how will he (the Dajjal) be destroyed? He said: Allah knows best. I said: I have been informed that Isa ibn Maryam (peace be upon them both) will destroy him. He said: Allah knows best; however, it is Allah who will destroy him and his followers. I said: Then what will happen after him? He said: The Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) narrated to me that: "People will plant saplings even after him and will acquire wealth even after him!" I said: Subhan Allah! Will people plant trees even after the Dajjal and acquire wealth even after him?! He said: Yes, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) narrated this very hadith to me.
This is the most astonishing hadith in the mention of the Dajjal. Atiyyah bin Sa'd is alone in narrating it from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), and the two Shaykhs (Imam Bukhari and Muslim) did not use the narrations of Atiyyah as evidence.

Note / Clarification: This addition is from al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis al-Mustadrak", and the words "fa-la takhfa" dropped out of manuscripts (Z) and (B).

Note / Clarification: The manuscripts have "rajulan" (in the nominative), whereas the correct and standard form is what we have established.

Note / Clarification: This addition is from "al-Talkhis", and it is necessary.

Grading: The basis of the hadith is sahih, (but) this chain is "da'if" (weak) because of the weakness of 'Atiyyah bin Sa'd al-'Awfi, and on this ground al-Dhahabi declared it defective in "al-Talkhis"; however, parts of it are corroborated.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Firas is "Ibn Yahya al-Hamdani".
