It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu al-Tufayl (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I was in Kufah when the news spread that the Dajjal had emerged. So we came to Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin Asid (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was speaking, and I said: The Dajjal has emerged! He said: "Sit down," so I sat down. Then the 'arif (the chief of the district) came to us and he too said that the Dajjal had emerged and that the people of Kufah were fighting him. He said to him as well: "Sit down," so he too sat down. Then it was announced that this was a lie spread by a dyer (sabbagh, a liar). We said: O Abu Sarihah! You made us sit for some particular purpose, so now narrate a hadith to us. He said: "If the Dajjal had emerged in this time of yours, the children would have driven him away by pelting him with potsherds. But the Dajjal will emerge when people are few in number, when there is weakness in religion and when mutual relations have become bad. He will reach every watering place, and the earth will be folded up for him as the skin of a ram is folded, until he comes to Madinah; he will overpower its outer parts but will be prevented from entering the city. Then he will head for the mountain of Iliya (the mountain of Bayt al-Maqdis) and besiege a group of Muslims. Their leaders will say to them: What are you waiting for to fight this tyrant, until you either meet Allah or are granted victory? So they will decide that when morning comes they will fight him. Then when morning comes, Isa ibn Maryam (peace be upon him) will be with them. He will kill the Dajjal and defeat his companions, until the tree, the stone and the clod of earth will call out: O believer! This Jew is hiding behind me, so kill him." He further said: "And there will be three signs in the Dajjal: he will be one-eyed, whereas your Lord is not one-eyed; between his two eyes will be written 'Kafir' (disbeliever), which every believer will read, whether he is unlettered or knows how to write; and of all mounts only the donkey will be made subservient to him, which is entirely ill-omened." Then he said: "There is something other than the Dajjal that I fear more for myself and for you." We said: O Abu Sarihah! What is it? He said: "Tribulations that will be like pieces of the dark night." We said: Who will be the worst people in these tribulations? He said: "Every orator who sways people with his eloquence, and every person who rushes swiftly towards the tribulation." We said: Who will be the best people? He said: "Every rich person who is independent of people and chooses obscurity." I said: I am neither rich nor obscure. He said: "Then be like the ibn labun (a young camel) which has neither a back that can be ridden nor udders that can be milked (that is, keep yourself away from the tribulations in such a way that no one can make use of you)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Hadith Takhrij«
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The one saying (this) is "Abu al-Tufayl": he is 'Amir bin Wathilah, a junior Companion.
Note / Clarification: ('arif): i.e. the overseer/chief of the people, the one placed at their head, who keeps track of their news and inquires into their affairs.
Note / Clarification: (sabbagh): i.e. a dyer of clothes. It is narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) as marfu' in Musnad Ahmad (14/8302) and Ibn Majah (2152) with a weak chain: "The most untruthful of people are the dyers and the goldsmiths". Ibn al-Athir says in "al-Nihayah": (This was said) because they put people off with their promises.
Note / Clarification: "al-khazaf" is hardened clay (baked clay/earthenware).
Note / Clarification: This refers to Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem).
Note / Clarification: "al-misqa'": eloquent (one who speaks fluently). "al-mudi'": one who is intense in his pace, walking fast.
Grading: The hadith is sahih, and it has the "ruling of marfu'" (i.e. it is to be regarded as a statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)), because what is mentioned in it cannot be said from opinion or ijtihad. Its chain is "hasan" on account of Mu'adh bin Hisham al-Dastuwa'i, and he is corroborated. Reference / Source: 'Abd Allah bin Ahmad narrated it in "al-Sunnah" (995) by way of Shu'bah from Qatadah; Qatadah said: I heard Abu al-Tufayl say: I passed by Hudhayfah bin Asid… However, he did not give the full wording of the hadith; he mentioned only the three signs of the Dajjal. Reference / Source: Ma'mar narrated it in "al-Jami'" (20827) from Qatadah without the second part (of the hadith), Technical note / Defect ('illah): but he narrated it as "mursal", not mentioning Abu al-Tufayl in it.
