Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8827

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Dajjal will emerge when there is weakness in religion and knowledge has turned its back. He will have forty days to roam the earth; one day of them will be like a year, one day like a month, one day like a week, and the rest of his days will be like your ordinary days. He will have a donkey which he will ride; the width between its two ears will be forty cubits. He will come to the people and say: I am your Lord! But your Lord is not one-eyed. Between his two eyes will be written 'K F R', which every believer will read, whether he knows how to write or not. He will pass by every water and watering place except Madinah and Makkah; Allah Almighty has made these two cities forbidden to him, and the angels will be guarding their gates."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this name was corrupted into "Muhammad". See his biography in "Tarikh al-Islam" (6/628).

Grading: Its chain is "strong" on account of Abu al-Zubayr.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): And he (Abu al-Zubayr) is "Muhammad bin Muslim bin Tadrus al-Makki".
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it in (23/14954) by way of Muhammad bin Sabiq from Ibrahim bin Tahman, with this same chain, at length. And the part of it that says: "Between his two eyes will be written 'kafir' (disbeliever), which every believer will read", Imam Ahmad narrated in (22/14512) by way of al-Husayn bin Waqid: Abu al-Zubayr narrated to me: Jabir narrated to us, as "marfu'".
General principle: This portion is established as "mutawatir" from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and a number of Companions narrated it in Musnad Ahmad and elsewhere, among them: Anas bin Malik (no. 12004), Abu Bakrah (20401), Safinah, the freed slave of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (21929), Hudhayfah (23279), some of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (23672), and 'A'ishah (25089); some of these are in the "Sahih", and the narration of Ibn 'Umar is in Sahih Muslim (2931).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A shahid (supporting report) for the first part of this hadith is the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) in Ibn Hibban (6812) with a "strong chain", in which the words are: "He will come out from the direction of the east at a time of disagreement and division among people, and he will reach as much of the earth as Allah wills in forty days; Allah knows best what their length will be…".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The account of his staying on the earth for forty days and their length is supported by the hadith of al-Nawwas bin Sim'an, which is in Sahih Muslim (2937) and has already appeared with the author (al-Hakim) under no. (8718). See also the hadith of 'Abd Allah bin 'Amr in Musnad Ahmad (11/6555) and Muslim (2940), and the hadith of Junadah bin Abi Umayyah from a man of the Ansar among the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in Musnad Ahmad (38/23090).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: His riding a donkey is supported by the preceding hadith of Hudhayfah bin Asid, but it contains no description of its (the donkey's) size. Also the hadith of Abu Hurayrah in al-Bukhari's "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (1/199) and in al-Hasan bin Rashiq al-'Askari's "Juz' min Amalihi 'an Shuyukhihi" (27), by way of Sulayman bin Bilal from Muhammad bin 'Uqbah bin Abi 'Attab from his father, from him (Abu Hurayrah), as marfu': "The Dajjal will come out on a whitish donkey, between whose two ears are seventy arm-spans…".
Grading: Its chain is weak, because the condition of Muhammad bin 'Uqbah is unknown and his father is majhul (unknown).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): And in Ibn Rashiq's chain there is also a narrator who is "matruk" (abandoned) and accused of lying.
Reference / Source: Ibn Kathir in "al-Bidayah wa al-Nihayah" (19/208) pointed to the hadiths of Jabir and Abu Hurayrah on this story of the donkey, then said of the hadith of Abu Hurayrah: "It is not authentic", and of the hadith of Jabir: "There is some reservation (nazar) about it".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: However, the account of the angels guarding Madinah and Makkah from the Dajjal is supported by the hadith of Anas bin Malik in al-Bukhari (1881) and Muslim (2943).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Also the hadith of Fatimah bint Qays (Muslim: 2942) supports it.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And also the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (Musnad Ahmad: 16/10265),
Technical note / Defect ('illah): but there is weakness in its chain.
