Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8821

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) narrated this hadith to us: "The Dajjal will emerge from a land in the east called Khurasan. He will be followed by people whose faces are like layered shields (broad and fleshy)."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The manuscripts have "sab': sab'", and the correct reading is what we have established.

Note / Clarification: This is how it is in the manuscripts, whereas "Talkhis al-Dhahabi" has "ka-anna wujuhahum" (as though their faces), and that agrees with the sources of the takhrij.

Grading: Its chain is "hasan" on account of al-Mughirah bin Subay', because three narrators narrated from him and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat", and al-Barqani reported from al-Daraqutni that he said: "He may be used as proof". Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar went too far in "al-Taqrib" and declared him trustworthy without qualification.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (Narrators): Abu al-Tayyah is "Yazid bin Humayd al-Duba'i", and 'Amr bin Hurayth is "'Amr bin Hurayth bin 'Amr al-Qurashi al-Makhzumi", who is a Companion.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it in (1/12 and 33) from Rawh bin 'Ubadah, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (4072) and al-Tirmidhi (2237) narrated it from Rawh by several routes. Imam al-Tirmidhi said: This hadith is "hasan gharib". See also the hadith after it.
Note / Clarification: "al-majann al-mutraqah" means shields that have been hammered (layer upon layer), i.e. they are broad and wide.
