Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8804

It is narrated from al-Ahnaf bin Qays; he said: I was in Madinah when suddenly my eyes fell on a man from whom people would run away as soon as they saw him. I asked: Who are you? He said: I am Abu Dharr, the Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). I said: Why do people run away from you? He said: I forbid them from hoarding treasures just as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to forbid them. I said: Today our stipends and incomes have increased greatly; do you fear anything for us? He said: "Not today, but soon these stipends will become the price of your religion. So when they become the price of your religion, leave them and keep away from them."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this word has been corrupted into "Hakim".

Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this name has been corrupted into "'Abd al-Razzaq"; the correction is from "Ithaf al-Maharah" (17470), and this chain recurs with the author (al-Hakim) in dozens of places in this book of his. Abu al-Muwajjih narrates from 'Abd al-Razzaq only through an intermediary.

Grading: Sahih, and this chain can possibly be graded hasan because of 'Abdullah bin Yazid al-Bahili (who is Ibn al-Aqna'), for two narrators narrated from him and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (Identification of narrators): Abu al-Muwajjih is Muhammad bin 'Amr al-Fazari, 'Abdan is 'Abdullah bin 'Uthman al-Marwazi, and 'Abdullah is Ibn al-Mubarak.
Reference / Source: Ahmad recorded it (35/21451) from 'Abd al-Razzaq, and at (21534) from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi, both of them from Sufyan al-Thawri, with this chain, in abridged form without his words: "إنَّ أعطياتنا …" (our stipends …) etc.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (21470), Muslim (992) (35) and Ibn Hibban (3260) recorded something similar through Khulayd al-'Asari; Ahmad (21485) through Abu Na'amah al-Sa'di; and al-Bukhari (1407), Muslim (992) (34) and Ibn Hibban (3259) through Abu al-'Ala' bin al-Shikhkhir; all three of them from al-Ahnaf bin Qays, with it.
