حدثنا أبو العباس محمد بن يعقوب، حدثنا الرَّبيع بن سليمان بن كامل المُرادِي، حدثنا عبد الله بن وهب، أخبرني سعيد بن أبي أيوب، عن شُرحبيل (2) بن يزيد، عن أبي عَلقَمة، عن أبي هريرة - ولا أعلمُه إلَّا عن رسول الله ﷺ قال: "إنَّ الله يَبعَثُ إلى هذه الأُمَّة على رأس كلِّ مئة سنةٍ من يُجدِّدُ لها دينَها" (3).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) - and I consider it to be attributed to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) himself - that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah Almighty will send for this Ummah, at the end of every hundred years, a person who will renew its religion for it."

(2) كذا وقع في النسخ الخطية، والمحفوظ في رواية هذا الحديث: شَراحيل بن يزيد، وهو المَعافري.
Note / Clarification: It occurs like this in the manuscripts, while the preserved (mahfuz) name in the narration of this hadith is "Sharahil bin Yazid", who is al-Ma'afiri.
(3) إسناده حسن من أجل شراحيل بن يزيد المعافري، فقد روى عنه جمع وذكره ابن حبان في "الثقات"، ووثقه الذهبي في "الكاشف"، وقال ابن حجر في "التقريب": صدوق. أبو علقمة: هو الفارسي المصري مولى بني هاشم.
Grading: Its chain is hasan because of Sharahil bin Yazid al-Ma'afiri, for a group narrated from him, Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat", al-Dhahabi declared him trustworthy in "al-Kashif", and Ibn Hajar said in "al-Taqrib": saduq (truthful).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu 'Alqamah is al-Farisi al-Misri, the freed slave (mawla) of Banu Hashim.
وأخرجه أبو داود (4291) عن سليمان بن داود المهري، عن ابن وهب، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (4291) recorded it from Sulayman bin Dawud al-Mahri, from Ibn Wahb, with this chain.
